Doom 3 Video Tutorials On 3D Buzz
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:37 PM
Category: DOOM 3

3D Buzz has just released a set of six video tutorials for Doom 3 modding and they cover the very basics in level design. More tutorials are to come 'when they are ready' so to speak. Note that in order to view the videos, you'll need both a method of extracting .rar archives (Winrar) and the Xvid codec which is available at 3D Buzz.

Tolwyn Releases An Affinity For Pain
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:03 PM
Category: DOOM Wads

Tolwyn released a Doom 2, single player level that requires a limit removing port that disables the Z-clipping of sprites. I think your safe with using Doomsday... as for ZDoom and Legacy, I have no idea if they disable Z-Clipping. Anyhow the map is called An Affinity For Pain which is on the idgames database.

 Double Shot From Tormentor667
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:00 PM
Category: DOOM Wads

Tormentor667 sent in a dual shot of Doom news today. First up he reports that the ZDoom Community Project is finished and you can download it on his Realm 667 site at this particular link right here. The project started about 2 months ago when Tormentor667 had an idea to create just one ZDoom map together with some other mappers
and friends. More info on the project can be found in this txt file link right here. Ok now for the 2nd item up for bids. Tormentor667 posted up an article called: "The Art of High Detail" which is a Guide for 2½ D Mapping. It explains ways to imrpove the overall level of detail in one's map. Here is the introduction text:
After 7 years of mapping since 1998 I learned a lot about the standards, about eyecandy and also about several tricks which can be used in the engine of DooM. In this time I developed my very special own style concerning level design and I also eked out a living to get well-known in the community. But without any help from other doomers, critizising my work and helping me to improve, I wouldn't have made it. This is why I now think, it is time, to give something back to the community, maybe to other newcomers which I have been one of them years ago! :)

In this article, you will get to know the important basics about level-design above the average, how you can achieve a high level of detail with some simple tricks and how you can achieve this "je ne sais quoi", this memory hook! So I hope this will help when you develop your very own map (once again ;)).
Go hit the Articles page for that jobby. Now I go and rest because Tormentor made my fingers bleed typing up all this stuff. ;) Oh and one last thing, he said on his site that he's starting his alternate civilian service and may not be around much. I'm not sure what this 'service' is exactly but good luck to him just the same.

 Doom 3 Sentry 1.1 Mod
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:30 PM
Category: DOOM 3

Sloanbone from Doom Central dropped us anouther email and this time around he has this to say about a Doom 3 Sentry mod he created:
Advanced Sentry 1.1 is a mod that created a Sentry to spawn and fight beside you when you throw a grenade. The key difference between it and 1.0 is that Sentry's now have a lifespan of 30 seconds before their batteries run out. Once they do they shut down and eventually disappear. Great stuff! There is a video preview also, trying to do that with all maps and mods.
So if your interested in some sentry help hit Doom Central and seek!

Anouther Doom 3 map has appeared on the scene and this time around its a Deathmatch level designed by Manzer. According to the email I received Manzer contributed to the Quake 1 Zerstorer project and released several other maps for id titles over the years. To check out the map and get the download hit Mancer01 Reincarnated page. Looks like a pretty cool level from the available screenshots. By the way, if you want the Quake Zerstorer Partial Conversion go here and use the (ftp.sunet.se) linkage. Thanks to Barry Allen for sending in the news.

Wads Completed Plus Doom 3 Map Support On WIP
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:59 PM
Category: DOOM Wads

In case ya'll didn't notice, Boris added Doom 3 support to Wads In Progress the other day. Just happens I remembered this fact a few short moments ago. The first and only Doom 3 entry on WIP is an untitled map by Shaviro which you can check out right here. Also theres been a few releases of previously In Progress Wads and they are as follows: MasterOfPuppets finished a Doom 2, single player, Zdoom map called Fear Reconstructed. Wadaholic along with ~X~ and Mr Rocket finished Doom Tournament 2004 for Doom Legacy and features new modes of play never seen in Legacy before. Nextly theres a Doom, single player map for Zdoom by Agent Spork thats called E1M5 Reincarnated. The lastest WIP release is a zarkyb level entitled Tremor Part One: Genesis and it's a single player, Doom 2 map that requires a Boom source port to run. So theres a lot of cool stuff just laying around for you to pick up.

 Stylsy Reviews Doom 3
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:41 PM
Category: DOOM 3

Stylsy blogged out a Doom 3 review on his blog site. Here is a blurb off his blog:
Not only are the graphics something to praise in the game, but sounds are also. The audio quality of games I often feel are overlooked, but from the sounds of weapons fire and creaking metal, to the shocking appearance of your foes, DOOM 3 really delivers - if the appearance of a moving zombie doesn't shock you, the sound of a nearby groan from one in the dark will. On the technical side of things, audio is crisp and well presented, even on poorer motherboard in-build sound cards such as the one on my gaming rig.
Here is the linakge to the full review which appears on Stylsy's Blogs.

 Mac Doom Editor Hellmaker Tweaked
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:13 PM
Category: DOOM Editing

Michael Mancuso dropped an email our way saying:
Paul Davidson's awesomely wonderful Mac Doom editor Hellmaker hasn't been updated since 1997, and as a result it lacks support for the new flags used by sourceports. Through the wonders of ResEdit, I've updated the program to add support for as many BOOM/Legacy linedef tags, thing types, and sector specials as I could find information about. More will be added in the future. The updated program is now available for the enjoyment of the one or two Mac Doomers still around.
The links Michael provided were to Ekim and a direct download for Hellmaker.

 Doomsday 1.8.1
Posted by Alex 'Slide' Mitchell at 6:13 PM
Category: Hosted Site | Ports/Mods

A new version of Doomsday the popular Classic Doom port has appeared with several enhancements, fixes and better Linux support over the previous version. Here's what project maintainer skyjake had to say:
Version 1.8.1 is now available. The purpose of this release is to clean up some of the remaining issues and generally improve the gameplay experience. Many of the fixes are specific to the *nix port. Also, it should now be possible to compile and run Doomsday on Mac OS X using fink and Apple's X11 server. However, the Mac support should be considered alpha quality. When I have a bit more time I'll attempt to create a proper Mac installer and a standalone build that works in the default Mac OS X 10.3 environment.

Changes vs. 1.8.0:
  • The non-smooth camera was removed. Now everything in the game will always be rendered at the highest framerate possible.
  • The implementation of camera smoothing was revised. Previously it didn't work very well when the framerate dropped below 35. In the earlier release candidates the smoothing was prone to fall out of sync, which caused slight skips in player movement. Now the smoothing works much better, if not perfectly.
  • Mouse input latency was reduced dramatically. In earlier versions mouse input suffered from a noticeable lag. Now input events are processed as fast as possible.
  • Improved stability. A couple of segfaults were located and fixed.
  • The glBSP node builder is now a plugin in the Doomsday installation. GL nodes will be built automatically when necessary. glbsp.exe is no longer included in the distribution packages. It is safe to disable all the glBSP options in KickStart and let Doomsday worry about building and updating the GL nodes. The engine Readme has more details about the glBSP plugin.
  • graphical improvements. A couple of FakeRadio issues were fixed. Lens flare defaults were toned down to more realistic settings.
  • Linux improvements include MUS music playback (see the readme!), configuration options for skipping compilation of OpenGL or any of the games, and display color adjustments (gamma, contrast, brightness).
  • To allow building Doomsday on a G4 (and other big-endian processors), a number of endianness issues were fixed.
skyjake hoped to have the new website up and running by now, but one cannot have everything. While work continues on that front, he has set up a Doomsday Wiki at SourceForge.net. Currently the wiki is still under construction, but don't let that stop you.

Pablo Dictter sent in some news in that he's updated with news about his Heretic map, which includes a few screenshots. He says the Cave map is finished but he's working on the difficulty settings. The map requires the ZDoom source port to run. Now we have to wait for him to finish it so we can play the thing. Due to having problems with his site he put up a temp site with the update stuff.

 Doom 3 Review On GamesFirst
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:50 PM
Category: DOOM 3

Tristan Mayshark sent us an email now that his review of Doom 3 is on GamesFirst. Here is a shot from the review itself:
Undeniably, the graphics and sound are unbelievable. You've undoubtedly seen the endless screenshots and gameplay movies at this point. Even on a pretty modest system, Doom 3 has a distinct look that's both gritty and realistic, to the point of seeming like a pre-rendered movie in places. However, ingenuity is where Doom 3 falls flat on its face.
Off with you to read the rest of that review.

 Sapphire Scar Interview

doom3xtreme.com sent in the news that they did up a Sapphire Scar DOOM 3 Mod interview. Here is a snatch from the question and answer session:
Yorick: Sapphire Scar started out as System Shock 2: Rebooted. We'd been planning to take the sleeper hit System Shock 2 and update it, using the Doom 3 engine. Unfortunately, within a week of having been properly started, Electronic Arts asked that we shut it down despite having earlier asked them for permission to continue; the details about their letter (and our response) are still available to those who are interested.

 More Doom 3 QuakeCon Coverage
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:05 PM
Category: DOOM 3

 John Carmack Speaks At QuakeCon

Eventually the complete technical presentation will be available on FilePlanet. So if you don't want to wait for the full presentation then go here. The article covers such things as the limitations of the Doom 3 engine, id's next game (few details revealed on the subject) and other bits that all tie into the rest of it. Its a good read so I suggest ya'll check it out.

 Doom 3 Expansion Packs?
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:18 PM
Category: DOOM 3

Wicked Anime Kid sent in a couple links to Doom 3 articles. The first one deals with Todd Hollenshead speaking at QuakeCon where he mentioned id software's next game and he confirmed that id Software is looking for a developer to do Return to Castle Wolfenstein 2 which will be done up using the Doom 3 engine. In the article it states that Quake IV will also use the Doom 3 engine but we already knew this ages ago when Raven Software announced they were doing the title. Also all we know from what id has said so far about thier next game, is that it won't be a sequel and will be a whole new title... Anyheep that article is on Total Video Games. Ok the next article is called Life after Doom and after reading it I can say the most interesting part is the possibility of Doom 3 expansion packs:
Expansion packs to "Doom 3" are likely as well. Again, id would not do these directly, but would oversee their development.

"That's something we want to do," said Hollenshead, "but we have to just get to the point where we say 'yeah, we're doing it."
So there you have it. D3 expansion packs are very possible and id software is working on a new mysterious title...

If you don't want to worry about bugs, then wait until they kill off any lingering code demons and release a stable version. Otherwise go for it.

I just caught a Hellchick email that popped into the olde inbox and she sayeth:
As you know, Activision will be holding the Kornelia FragFest tomorrow (Friday) at QuakeCon in the Activision booth. We'd also like to let everyone know that the Global Gaming League (www.ggl.com) and Art of War Central (www.artofwarcentral.com) will also be there with DJWheat to shoutcast the event, bringing it live to gamers across the world who can't be here in person to take on Kornelia in our 1v1 DOOM 3 challenge.
Hellchick says that she is hoping to see you at QuakeCon!

 DOOM 3 Channel Check
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 12:00 AM
Category: DOOM 3

Here is some news item I dug out of a newsletter.
RBC Capital Markets analyst Stewart Halpern and his crew took some time to check on the performance of Activision, Inc.’s PC game DOOM 3 at retail. The results indicated that “fears that DOOM 3 might disappoint are unwarranted,” as 65.0 percent of the 20 specialty retailers queried stated that the game is still selling well. 25.0 percent gave “neutral feedback” in relation to the title’s current selling status, while another 10.0 percent indicated that sales of Electronic Arts’ Madden NFL 2005 had eaten into DOOM 3 sales. The channel check was fueled by, according to RBC, an 11.0 percent drop in Activision’s stock over the past week, “with the past two days' decline apparently mostly due to fear that DOOM 3 may not be selling up to expectations.” RBC labeled those fears "a misperception” in light of its findings.
So yeah games are selling and whatnot.

id Software To Release SDK For Modders
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:02 PM
Category: DOOM 3

I was just messing around with DoomEdit, the editor that comes with Doom 3. I made it as far as making a playable room and got it running... damned cool. So because of this I took a stroll looking for some editor info. I spotted on HomeLan Fed that id software had a mod making seminar for Doom 3 that was held at QuakeCon with programmers Robert Duffy and Jim Dose, animator Fred Nilsson and intern Robert Harris. Coming out of this is some news about id releasing a SDK, which might be out sometime next week.
Even though the gameplay doesn't lend itself to vehicles, Doom 3 does support vehicles and when the SDK is released a sample map will be included that will have a six wheeled buggy in it, which will help with mod makers who want vehicles in their mods.
Also note that id will put up editing tutorials and id plans to release exporters for programs like Maya and some sample character models for the game in order to help mod artists with their work. So this is all good news for us level designers and mod makers. There's also some basic info about a near-future game patch that at least fixes a couple MP exploits... Go check out that article.

 GameAxis Doom 3 Review
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:37 AM
Category: DOOM 3

Over on GameAxis they snapped up thier version of a Doom 3 review:
Thanks to the latest rewritten source engine by John Carmack and department, DOOM III is now a grand illusion of amorphous shadows and photon manipulation. Every screenshot taken on DOOM III is worthy of a wall painting, set beside Da Vinci’s The Vitruvian Man and skewered with a blood-soaked pitchfork. In summary, DOOM III is no longer about an art-form. It is art by itself.
So hit that review and get reading.

 New Ed Lima Interview
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:39 PM
Category: DOOM 3

music4games.net put up an interview with Ed Lima the Doom 3 sountrack composer and sound designer.
It's funny to think about it now, because when I first got the job with id, I began to think to myself, "Hmm, this could be pretty big," not knowing at the time how the final product was going to shape up. Once I started working on the project, I put my blinders on, so to speak, and just focused on the work at hand. But now that I've been off the job for about a month, I've allowed myself the opportunity to step back and really savor the excitement running through the gaming community. I must say it feels quite satisfying to see that my own small contributions to the game are so well-received by both the gamers and the press.
Wander on over and read that interview in it's entirety.

players can take on a professional gamer, and if you can score even just a couple of frags on her you get a chance at winning a brand new Alienware laptop.
It's all happening at QuakeCon people! Also noted on the QuakeCon site that Tweaker (Chris Vrenna's Band), the band behind Doom 3's theme song will be performing live at QuakeCon.

 GameOver's Doom 3 Review
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 3:57 PM
Category: DOOM 3

GameOver posted up thier version of a Doom 3 Review and here is a snip:
Well, it’s been some time since a superhype game came out to grace our screens, and today we celebrate that day – Doom 3 is upon us. That is, it’s been upon us since August 2nd, but that is but a minor detail. It has arguably been one of the, if not the most expected game of the year (though I imagine it ties with Half-Life 2 for this spot), and certainly of the past several years, what with the other contenders like Duke Nukem Forever fading well into oblivion.
Go for it and read that Review.

 Doom 3 Mods

Category: DOOM 3

While surfing around the electronic highway I found a little site called Filefront which contains a couple of little mods for Doom 3. Read on.
Ungibbable. In other words no giblets. Keeps bodies in one piece. No fun there.
Sentry Bot Mod Makes all the little drones follow you around like lost puppies.
Flashlight/Torch Turns your pistol into a torch. Well at least you can blind the imps with it.
There is a small not at the bottom which states that these are rough around the edges and you should probably be careful before tinkering with the game.

Thats not all though as the cover mounted CD/DVD contains the latest version of Doomsday, although they have listed it as jDoom. Plus there is also a two page spread about JC.

My Guy Games informed us that thier review of Doom 3 is all set for you guys to read. Here is a taste from the larger review, full meal deal:
As previously mentioned the game managed to scare the shit out of me at times. While the graphics helped this fact, the sound is what really sent chills down my spine. The voice acting featured is some of the best I have seen so far in a FPS. The ambient sounds though are what are sweet as hell though.
So hit that review and get informed.

It's interesting to note that id software will be making a new game title that is not a sequel to anything they've done before. We already knew this of course but I find it exciting and can't help but be curious as to what id creates for thier next game... we'll just have to wait 3 ~ 4 years to play it.

ATI Releases Doom 3 Catalyst 4.9 Beta Drivers
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:34 PM
Category: DOOM 3

Blues News reported that ATI has released DOOM 3 CATALYST 4.9 BETA. These drivers are to be used with caution so please read the warning before using them. There's also more info on Team Radeon so be sure to read that and read this quote:
The Catalyst 4.9 beta drivers are a sneak peak into future drivers that ATI is continuously working on. They were released mainly for the OpenGL component update, targeting improved Doom3 performance. Having said that, newer generations of hardware will get the most benefit from this driver (X800* series). While I haven't done specific benchmarks, X800 users can see performance increase of 5~30%, depending on the level and the system/hardware type. Regretfully, older hardware, such as 9700's and even 9800's will not get as much benefit. And if paired with a slower system (or with less memory) might see +/- performance improvements.
So use at your own risk. If your comp blows up you didn't read about this here.

Freelance composer Ed Lima got interviewed on telefragged by Finger. Heres one of those quote jobbys:
Finger: What's your name and what work did you do on DOOM 3's music and sound?

Ed Lima: My name is Ed Lima, and I worked as principal sound designer and composer on Doom3. I worked on all of the ingame music, monster sounds, weapons sounds, a large part of machine and background level sounds, and most of the sounds you hear during the demonic influences and scary scenes in the game.
Also worth re-mentioning at this time is this Doom 3 review that was written by Finger just so you know.

 Gamer's Hell Review
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 8:19 AM
Category: DOOM 3

Gamer's Hell posted up thier review for Doom 3.
Doom 3 is basically split into a fairly large number of levels, most of which being on the research station, but some in considerably hotter areas, such as hell itself. You don’t fight much in open areas, so the action is focused on very tight in-your-face firefights. You’ll probably run through miles of corridors during the game, but I can assure you that the level designers did a great job making amazingly detailed and also quite surprising levels.
Thanks to Wicked Anime Kid for spotting this piece of news. Also note that the UA-Corp site changed from a countdown jobby to a Transport Arrived....yay.

 The Age Of Doom Article
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:23 PM
Category: DOOM 3

Time.com has an article online called The Age Of Doom. Here is a snip in the form of a quote:
Before Doom most games took place in flatland: they were two-dimensional, like Donkey Kong or Pac-Man. But Carmack figured out a way for the cheapo, underpowered personal computers of the day to create depth, to render three-dimensional spacea miniature theater, a virtual dreamworld in which the player could move around at will. "You could have fun with those old games, but it was more of a detached, abstract sort of fun," Carmack says. "But when you take the exact same game play, put it in the first-person perspective, and you go around a corner, open up a door, and there's a monster, like, full-screen, right there, you saw people just go aggggghhh and jump back.
Go ahead and read the full article and wonder who that lucky janitor was....
