| NewDoom.com Arrives! |
As you may have noticed elsewhere today, NewDoom.com is one year old. Hard to
believe a year has gone by since Mindless
Games & Entertainment decided to branch out and add a NewDoom.com
to their stable. This is just a look back over the past year at some of the events
that have come to pass.
In the beginning, there was just an idea and its name was New Doom.....

Welcome to NEWDOOM.com! by wmull [3:36 am PT - Jun. 3, 2000]
Welcome to the latest site to join our bustling network - NewDoom.com! We're looking
forward to enjoying a long and exciting ride with everyone in this vast and rabid
community of DOOM fanatics, past, present and future! You may know us from some
of our other sites: HexenWorld, Heretic
II, Raven Games, Soldier
of Fortune, Rune News, Voyager
Elite Force, and we're just getting started! Certainly not last, and certainly
not least, this site is a very unique and special adventure for us! Because, well
. . . it's all about the NEW DOOM, bay-bee! :) So please don't stray too far,
there's much more to come!
The New Doom
The New Doom had already been announced by John Carmack in his now famous .plan
update but this was also posted on the first day online.
The other NewDoom/Doom3 news this month was as follows
- Activision's Senior Publicist Michael Larson told Stomped today
that because Activision was a publicly traded company, he could not comment
at this time if Activision would, in fact, be the publisher of the next DOOM
game.
- Trent Reznor (who as you remember did the awesome score and most of the
sounds for Quake1) mentions that he's been speaking with John Carmack about
scoring the soundtrack for the New Doom: Then he confides that hes been
talking to John Carmack about scoring the music for a new version of Doom.
I would do something like that mainly because its a hobby of mine,
I appreciate the technology, and its fun to work outside Nine Inch Nails
once in a while.
Hosted Sites
The first hosted site at NewDoom.com was JDoom.
The debut version released was on June 3rd 2000 and allowed Doom to be played
in OpenGL or Direct3D. This was succeeded by v0.81 on June 6th. JDoom
was up to v0.82 by the end of the month.
Headlines
- Version 1.12 of Doom3d.
- Doomsday 1.0 released at JHexen.
- QDOOM
(Quake done DOOM style) released.
- EDGE v1.24
also released to the world.
July 2000
The New Doom
There was not much news on this important subject this month. There were some
interviews with people within the gaming community.
The one that really stands out was this one with Paul Steed who was interviewed
at Stomped.
Hosted Sites
The hosted sites at NewDoom increased with the addition of:
Goldeneye Doom2
Unholy Software
Olymp CS Doom Team Kill This Is Doom
DoomarenA
OSC Doom
Mythos Outpost
Doom Legacy
Ferrari's Doom2 Deathmatch Rankings
Now that is a huge jump in hosted site numbers.
Headlines
- Jakko released Build 2 of his Doomsday Client/Server Test. This
time the package includes support for both JDoom and JHeretic and features
a number of bug fixes for the previous JHeretic DLL.
- Vavoom reached V 1.2 this month.
- There was a bit of bad press for csdoom when it was claimed that Fly, the
creator of csdoom, could take over any server you may choose to set up, and
perform "administrative" functions (kick people etc). The piece
of code in question was changed and all was well.
- There was a new version of Doom3D
released bringing it up to v1.14.
- New marine on duty at NewDoom.com as Pailhead joins up.
August 2000
The New Doom
Quite a few things to mention this month on the New Doom. Although not much
in the way of content.
At Quakecon graeme Devine spoke about the game that id canceled before it started
to pursue Doom. The game, called Quest, was going to be massive multiplayer style
spanning multiple servers and even featuring the Dungeon Master feature similar
to D&D games.
John Carmack was interviewed at Stomped
and got a little information from the man himself. Stomped: I know you can't
talk about your current project, but how are things at id right now?
Carmack: "Well we got lots of really interesting technology
coming out. We have got the strongest programming team we have ever had in the
company where we've got programmers that are working on areas that we have conventionally
short-shrifted. Some of the things like sound and game logic are things where
I would just always do something that's acceptable that would get the job done.
There was never like a primary focus for it. Now we've got expert programmers
dedicated to it. We've got a programmer dedicated to making great sound; a programmer
dedicated to making great game technology; a programmer dedicated to great tools.
Of course, we are going to have great graphics and great networking and all
this type of stuff we have always been known for, but a lot of the areas that
have been kind of our secondary strength are going to be brought to primary
level and that's going to be really cool."
Other Doom stuff mentioned in John Carmacks Quakecon speech is just below.
- Doom will be going back to DLLs, and will be using C++ instead of C
- Carmack feels the visual 'wow factor' of the new Doom will be a greater
jump than it was from the recent jumps between Quake/Quake2/Quake3. (Lots
of neeto new effects), but it will also focus on actual gameplay instead of
just that 'wow factor'
- Single player is the absolute focus, and Carmack feels it will be their
best single player experience to date.
- The game and editor/tools are now combined. You'll be able to simply type
doom.exe -editor for example (Or maybe even an in-game toggle)
- Spending more time on the sound code / game code with the new programmers
on the team.
- There probably wont be much discussion on the gameplay specifics since
what made Doom so big is always a subject of arguments. (No talking about
the game itself)
- All of the Doom code is being written from scratch. Rendering etc.
Hosted Sites
The Epidermis Emporium
The Megawad
Not Strictly a hosted site but this month saw the start of the Lost
Doom Sites section here at Newdoom.
Headlines

grabs was his own copy of the Doom master disks given to him by Jay Wilbur.
- Doom Legacy v1.30 was released with lots of improvements.
- A fake shot of the new Doom game appeared over at Doom3.dk
- Danok must have released what seemed like 100 definitions for JDoom.
- Mirrors, sky boxes, bullet holes and scorch marks were new features being
added to Zdoom and was the reason for the hold up in releasing v 1.23.
