 Linux DOOM III
Posted by Jason 'FACE.UK' Sloan at 1:19 PM
Category: General

Linuxgames has an interview with id Software's Timothee Besset who maintains the Linux ports of Quake III: Arena and Return to Castle Wolfenstein, as well as the cross-platform Q3A-engine level editor GtkRadiant. During the interview the subject of DOOM came up:
Given that DOOM III was the talk of the convention, I was wondering if its availability on Linux would be more of a killer app (despite it not being an exclusive game) than previous id titles. Besset noted that, looking back, id has always been basically the only company that's always been there for Linux, pushing for better hardware support and willing to maintain multi-platform code. He hopes that DOOM III would help convince other companies that similar ventures are worth it in the long run, as the porting process itself helps Quality Assurance teams track down general bugs that only become readily apparent on another OS, and having solid code is in the best interests of all parties involved.
Also there was this bit at the end of the interview:
Finally, I asked him what some of his other projects at id are, to which he simply replied "Doom".
So there you have it. To read the full interview head along to Linuxgames.

 Remix It Up
Posted by Jason 'FACE.UK' Sloan at 12:48 AM
Category: General

Picklehammer has sent along word of a DOOM remix he has come across. The track is a new version of E1M5 by Scott Peebles. He had this to say:
I present my next mix, Entitled "Synthetic Demon (E1M5)" it's from the original Doom, Episode 1, Mission 5. The original was a rather boring atmospheric peice, and i changed it into an upbeat techno mix with a little orchestra and distortion tossed in for good effect :)
You can download it from Overclocked Remix.

 More From Quakecon
Posted by Jason 'FACE.UK' Sloan at 1:13 AM
Category: General

Gamersclick has a preview of DOOM III, including some screeshots.
The most noticeable - and, indeed, most substantial - improvement that Doom III makes over its predecessors is simply in terms of the graphics. The sound is phenomenal (Nine Inch Nails's Trent Reznor contributed a lot to the soundtrack), but we've had phenomenal sound before. The atmosphere is as creepy as you could ask, and the game is as engrossing as - though perhaps less frantic than - the Doom titles you remember. But, we've seen all this before. What we've never seen before, though, is a game that looked so amazing.
To read the rest, head along to Gamersclick.
