 ATI Fights Back
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 12:38 AM
Category: DOOM 3

Megagames is saying that ATI is fighting back with the whole Doom 3 performance thingie. This comes about after nvidia cards were tagged as being better for running Doom 3.
In response to an enquiry by Team Radeon, ATIs Chris Hook has suggested that since the game has not been officially released yet, we shouldn't rush to any conclusions and quickly manages to get an innuendo in, regarding nVidia's use of partial precision. He goes on to add We expect to have updated drivers available in the coming weeks. Mr. Hook clearly expects the introduction of the new drivers to play an important part in performance upgrade, although he does not mention exactly how that improvement will come about.

Creative Pulls Patent Ploy on id Software
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:50 PM
Category: DOOM 3

Bloodbob dropped an email message in our inbox here at Newdoom to let us know that Creative pulled some kinda patent ploy on id software and they ended up making a deal for the shadow technology used in DOOM 3.
The patent situation well and truly sucks.

We were prepared to use a two-pass algorithm that gave equivalent results at a speed hit, but we negotiated the deal with Creative so that we were able to use the zfail method without having to actually pay any cash. It was tempting to take a stand and say that our products were never going to use any advanced Creative/3dlabs products because of their position on patenting gaming software algorithms, but that would only have hurt the users.
Read the post on the Beyond3D forums here and read thier news item on the subject right here.

GeForce 6800's Best For Doom 3
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:00 PM
Category: DOOM 3

Yahoo spotted up an article saying that the NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra and GeForce 6800 GT Chips Proclaimed Best for Doom 3.
All that considered, for those of you that are in the high end video card market, the GeForce 6800 GT looks to very much be the sweet spot when it comes to playing Doom 3 with all the eye candy turned on at high resolutions. Obviously the 6800 Ultra is even faster for those of you that need the best no matter the cost.
Well get your wallets out and start forking over the big bucks for one of those 6800's... yeah!

Creative & Other Doom 3 Engine Games
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:35 PM
Category: id Software

In a newsletter I spotted some Doom 3 related news.
Creative Technology Ltd has entered into a deal with id Software that will see Creative develop EAX Advanced HD 3D audio options for future licensees of the DOOM 3 engine. The enhanced game engine is expected to be ready for licensing by the end of the 2004 calendar year. Hock Leow, Creative’s CTO, stated, "We look forward to the challenge of implementing EAX Advanced HD Multi-Environment technology within the DOOM 3 engine, and subsequently working with id to make these enhancements available to their licensees.”
Hopefully we'll get to see some of these other Doom 3 engine games sometime soon.

Kaiser Is On A Roll & Keeps On Rolling Doom Style
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 8:46 PM
Category: DOOM Wads

Just got word from Kaiser that he's doing a lot of stuff and we can expect to see an update on his site soon with some nifty java-scripting stuffage. So instead of me typing out the tidbits of what Kaiser had to say in email about his various endeavors lets now do a quote:
Anyways, wanted to mention that I am still not dead yet (nor my projects :P) but one thing for certain, that SvStrife will be completed, in fact, its just about done along with Shareware support. Expect a non-beta release in a week or two.

Doom64 Outcast is still kicking as well, but its progress is VERY slow (due to -0- intrest). Although Outcast is now availible to testers, so if anybody want a sneak peak, then email me at right here.

Also, a small project is in the works as well (YES, I don't have a life). This project is a gathering of all dsv megawads in one wad for Zdoom (cleverly titled ZDSV) so you're looking at 96+ maps of Dooming goodness.
So there you have it, the proverbial Doom Community Beaver is at it again. Now we wait for him to actually finish this stuff. Meanwhile visit DSV Outworld and get some Kaiser made Doom stuff....

Tim: Oh yeah, we're thrilled! To be truly honest, DOOM is even better than we thought it was going to be when we first started. We have twenty super talented highly motivated people that put everything they could into this title. We're very proud of this child that we're sending off into the world.

 Doom 3 Interview On Gamespot
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:03 PM
Category: DOOM 3

gamespot.com also posted up a nice interview with id software. Clippage time!
I can't really comment on what everybody else is doing. I can comment for id. We don't think the next game is going to take four years. Doom 3 technology is a brand-new paradigm in terms of the way the world reacts and is created, how art is created, how many textures have to be used, and how that stuff works. When you're working with technology that's not fully fleshed-out, the learning curve is very, very steep. Steep unlike any game that has ever been created. However, now that we've climbed that, we'll definitely benefit from having that experience for our next project.
Go ahead and read the full 3 page interview!

 Gamespy's Doom 3 Interview
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:55 PM
Category: DOOM 3

Well it was pointed out to me that gamespy.com has posted up a nice interview with id that's titled: id Software talks DOOM 3 and beyond (PC). Here is a quote from the interview:
GameSpy: Do you have any idea what the demo will contain?

Tim Willits: Yes, but until we figure out exactly what we want to show, I would hate to say something and then be wrong, and have people expect something and then not have it delivered. It'll be cool, and we're confident that the demo will give people a good sense of what DOOM 3 is. We just have to figure out the best way to do that.
They talk about the demo, multiplayer, XBox version, some stuff about Raven doing Quake 4 and other coolness. Hit It!

 Various Doom 3 News
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:23 PM
Category: DOOM 3

Man am I ever tired of messing around with my new computer. After a long battle with swapping out power supplys and video cards and.... it ended up I had a bad stick of RAM. :( I also ended up missing a number of interesting Doom III news items. Unfortunately if my comp is down, I don't get to get the jump on any news items. So anyhow I'm gonna conglomerate some stuff here for anybody who may have missed these DooM III jobbys.

HomeLan Fed has a Doom Board Game Interview. Fileshack has a Doom 3 G4 Movie. Also on Shack News is the info about the DooM 3 System Requirements. Here are the basic requirements to run Doom 3.

- A 1.5-gigahertz Intel Pentium 4 chip or AMD Athlon 1500.
- 384 megabytes of memory.
- Two gigabytes of hard drive space.
- An nVidia GeForce 3 graphics card or better; or an ATI Technologies 8500 or better.
So there you have some of the stuff I missed. heh.

Dual DooM III News Posts In One

Time has a one page preview article pasted up titled A First Look at Doom 3:
Doom 3 runs on all-new technology, and let's not mince words: there has never been a game that looks this good.
Go read that preview article. Since I just found this other jobby I'll post it up alongside that preview. Gamespy has the lowdown on DOOM 3 multiplayer networking info. Here's a clippage:
GameSpy: Can you clarify what kind of multiplayer networking architecture DOOM 3 will use? Will it be peer-to-peer or traditional client-server (or something altogether different)?

Robert Duffy: It is Client-Server.
Ok that article is the multiplayer one. Nite!

 Doom 3 Uncensored In Germany
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:08 PM
Category: DOOM 3

Noticed on Fragland that they reported that Doom III will be freely available in Germany. Normally the violent games that do get released in Germany are pre-censored by the developers changing blood color to green and changing human enemies with robotic ones. Doom III will be the first id software title that will be available in Germany since Commander Keen. Does this mean that Doom III isn't as gory as Quake II or the original Doom?? Whatever the reason, it's good news to the German Doomers. Here is that article blurb.

DooM 3 Has Gone Gold! Todd Hollenshead Says It's Done!!
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 1:55 PM
Category: DOOM 3

Todd Hollenshead, CEO for id software announced in his webdog .plan DOOM 3 has GONE GOLD! It's DONE!!!!
It's DONE! Yes, this is the official word that DOOM 3 has been code released and has been approved for manufacturing! It won't be long now until the anticipation ends and the PH34R begins ;-) We literally just hung up with Activision and have confirmed that our latest release candidate has been mutually approved and is finally GOLD. Thanks to everyone for their patience (yeah right! =) and for everyone at id, Activision and our numerous partners for helping us create what I believe is absolutely the best game we have ever made.
Check out Todd Hollenshead's .plan update! Official release date is Aug 5th in the US. Todd says that Retailers in the States will be allowed to pick up games starting at 12:01 AM on August 3rd. In the UK expect to see the game around the 6th of August. Everywhere else expect to see the game around August 13th.. Oh man I'm so like totally excited now... :D I waited 4 years to announce this game going GOLD! WOOT! Also check out that UA-CORP site because it now has some activity, which is actually a countdown timer dealie... Flash required.

New Doom 3 Article On IGN
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 1:21 PM
Category: DOOM 3

ign.com has a new Doom 3 article that further hints that the game is closer to a release as everybody hopes:
A few days before this sheet appeared, id CEO and all around nice guy Todd Hollenshead stated that Doom 3 will have a significant presence at QuakeCon 2004. The large deathmatch tournament planned for the second week in August is another tantalizing hint that the game may be done. Add that to the fact that the team opted not to show the PC version at E3 so they'd have more time to finish the game and this appearance at QuakeCon 2004 makes an imminent release seem even more likely.
The article is three pages long so go ahead and read that while I seek some other stuff.

 Doom III Rumors Flying About
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:15 PM
Category: DOOM 3

I decided to look for some MGE news just a few moments ago and my first stop was Shack News where I noticed right off that they posted about the lastest Doom III rumor.... which happens to be... that some people think that DooM III is done because of this marketing flyer jobby that is on Gamespot that says:
We said it will be out when it's done....it's done!
I wouldn't read too much into that however. The game will be ready when it's done and id software and Activision have made no official announcements about when the game will be released beyond what Todd Hollenshead said when he mentioned Doom III will be ready to ship this summer. Remember that the last day of Summer is September 21st so we all may have a bit to wait yet.

DooM 3 Inaugural Deathmatch Championship At QuakeCon
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 3:07 PM
Category: DOOM 3

Where is all this news coming from today? I got a newsletter that reported the fact that DooM III will appear at the 9th annual QuakeCon with a cool DOOM 3 Inaugural Deathmatch Championship! Quote time:
Yes, you read that correctly. DOOM 3 Deathmatch is coming to QuakeCon 2004, and there has never been a more level playing field. With DOOM 3 launching this summer, there won’t be anyone who has had time to practice or master the game, and almost any QuakeCon attendee has a chance to walk away with one of the exclusive DOOM 3 prizes. We’re not telling you what they are just yet, but let’s just say that they’re fast. Registration for this 128-player tournament will begin August 12, 2004 – the first day of QuakeCon.
Check out the Press Release for the entire QuakeCon information dealie. By the way the newsletter says Doom III will ship for the PC on August 3. An Xbox version will follow this fall. That's still not an official release date but it does sound good. ;)

Just when you think theres no news, something appears out of the internet fog. Anyhow today I jumped on Wads In Progress and noticed anouther map has been finished. So what we have here (or there I mean) is Nilla DooM by Use3d which is a Doom 2, single player map set (not sure how many maps) that is designed for doom2.exe. Go and get Nilla DooM while I go and take a rest.

Yikes! There for a sec I thought there wasn't any DooM news at all to mention today. Then I remembered that Wicked Anime Kid had posted about a new DooM Remix on OverClocked ReMix. This time around the Remix is Final Doom: Iron Demon and is remixed by To. The file is 4.1mb and just click on the green arrow when you get over there. Ooh and by the way Happy Independance Day all you American DooMers and lurkers!
