Zoow
Jow has updated his Zoow: Alien Dimension site with the news that the demo packet, which was released recently, is now available with Hi-Res textures. There is also a new weapon on the weapons page. In case you didn't know this project requires the Doomsday engine.
All Your Wads Are Belong To No Poet
More reviews from that Pheonix like review site Pray For Death. No Poet has got 3 new reviews for you to browse through. They are Talosian Incident, Local Hero and Alien Vendetta. Here is a snip from Local Hero:A small city-style map for Doom 2. Making no pretences, the text file recommends this wad to Doomers who want a quick blast rather than a protracted adventure. And on this, Local Hero certainly delivers. Ultra Violence is an absolute smash - you'd be hard-pressed not to enjoy the various slaughters. There's also a really imaginative Mancubus battle in which it's possible to get cornered, so stay sharp. Check them out at Pray For Death.
Commander Doom
A new TC has been started that will feature non other than Commander Keen. The TC is apparently in the alpha stage, although there are a few screenshots. There is a list of weapons that are to be added to the TC, the most interesting one being the Pogostick. If you would like to help out on this, then get along to Commander Doom.
Death Summoned Elsewhere
Agent Spork has let us know the his Death Summoning site has now been moved to some new webspace. Just click on the link and update those bookmarks.
Rebirth
Bob larkin has sent along an email to let us know of a new megawad/partial conversion called "Rebirth":It is a full 32 level megawad with some changes besides the new maps. What I found interesting right from the get-go was the headless former humans. Read up on this HERE.
Doomsday In Lights
Doomsday HQ has been updated with Skyjake talking lights: While it's still true that multitexturing will help with detail textures, interpolated texture animation and 3D models, I'm afraid dynamic lights aren't a feasible application. After I had implemented the multitextured approach for dynamic lights, some testing showed that in practice they perform quite poorly. Fillrate is not the bottleneck in general; it's the numerous GL state changes that must be done. It's quite common that the state must be changed for each and every primitive. Since there can be thousands of them in complex scenes, performance dropped quite dramatically. All this means that I will have to continue rendering lights using the old multipass method. I will try to minimize the possible edge artifacts, though. The redesigned handling of the dynamic lights will allow some convenient configuration settings, though. For example, it will be possible to limit the number of lights per surface. This is good for situations where numerous light sources (plasma ammo) are temporarily occupying an area.
Smooth texture animation is now working. I have all of Doom's texture and flat animation sequences defined in Defs\jDoom\Anim.ded. This is a much-needed improvement for the water/lava/etc. animations. I could not have put it better myself.
Legacy CTF
Kaiser has posted in the Legacy Forums about the latest on Legacy CTF. Here is the topic starter: I kept my word. An alpha version of CTF Legacy is in the works right now and so far the coding of the red flag pickup is almost completed (player can now pickup the flag and actually hold the flag while he is moving or shooting, and drops it if he is killed) I plan on finishing the blue flag either today or tomorrow. Then I'll start working on how the player can drop off his flag and gain a score. shouldn't be that hard. He is also asking for any suggestions that he could add. So if you have any get along to the Legacy Forums and have your say.
Skulltag v0.95b Public Testing
Carnevil is calling on Doomers everywhere to help out with the public testing of Skulltag v0.95. To do this you will need to be on IRC, connect to irc.freenode.net, and join the channel #skulltag. This is for this week only and carnevil will be there to take a look at problems as they arise and fix them. Among its new features are new monsters, ZDoom v2.0+ support , a new weapon and a new duel deathmatch mode.
First Strife Pwad?
|
Category: ClassicDoom_Editing|x|ClassicDoom_SourcePorts |
Gokuma has released what he thinks is the first release of a strife pwad on the internet. He describes it as a good sized DM level that is suitable for 2-8 players. There are three screenshots to view plus a link to the zip at Gokuma's Pit of Grotesque Abominations.
Zoow Demo
Jow has announced in our Forums the release of a new Demo for Zoow Alien Dimension. It's quite big at 10.5 MB this is due to the inclusion on many ambient sounds. The first map is same as in the previous packet with the Second map is being the new part. The city map is not complete though and there is still some stuff to be added.
Sunday Review
Sarge has been reviewing again. This time it's a ZDoom map called Greasy Z-Sloth, which has been reviewed at the request of the author. Here is a snip:A fairly short little ZDoom map with a Massmouth sort of attitude to it. The level design is pretty decent for the most part, with a theme reminiscent of early to middle Doom II maps (notably 'O of Destruction'). Read the rest at Sarge Baldy's Hardass Doom Reviews.
Outpost Of DOOM
Outpost Of Doom II has updated with this little lot. Now let's deal with my current project, "Outpost of Hell 3 - The Citadel". I updated the "Projects" section with some information about how it is proceeding. But I have had some problems to continue it, because of WadAuthor limitations. In fact, the level reached quite 30000 sidedefs and my editor crashes as I try to add other sidedefs! However I am trying to solve this problem... But this kind of problems won't stop me! ;-) I asked experienced Doomers (such as "Hellcore" team members and other great WADsters) for help and they are helping me. We've found out two solutions: 1) deleting or reducing "petty" sectors and linedefs, such as those which I created to obtain detailed lighting effects; 2) splitting the level into two different maps, as I made with "Outpost of Hell 2"; but this solution would influence level gameplay! So now I am trying to apply the first solution, but probably I will have to split the level anyway! Experienced coder, who knows ACS scripts well, is wanted... I am looking forward to receiving your applications! There is more and you can also submit your offer of help. Should you wish to do so of course.
Lost DOOM Sites
Okay we have managed to squeeze out yet more from the the world wide web. So cast your eyes downwards to this little lot. · Neal's DOOM Page This is a tribute page with information on the game although there are a few of his own wads listed. Unfortunately though the links to the zips no longer work.
· Necros Doom Page A page with no original material but it contains links and text about a couple of ports and some of the more famous megawads of our time.
· Badgers House This page has one level called Badger. There is however links to some of the more well known DOOM skins that have been seen over the years. These could be the last lost DOOM sites you will see but as I have said before we will keep looking.
Doomarena
Doomarena has updated with four news items. The main one is about the Medieval map which I talked about in the last update. This is map17 for the NewDoom Community Project and I thought I had finished it but it went away for testing and then came back. Nothing serious just some tweaks and fixes. Read the rest at Doomarena.
DOOM Virgin
Pumpkin Smasher has posted up his first wads and would like you all to take a look. The levels were made for Doom 1/Ultimate Doom Episode 1. The series is not complete yet but there are more promised. Check out the screenshots and download the levels at My Doom Wads. These are not mine thats just the name of the page.
DOOM 3 Deathmatch At QuakeCon 2003
|
Category: Doom_III|x|id_Software |
DOOM 3 will be making an appearance at the upcoming QuakeCon 2003 multiplayer gaming event. QuakeCon attendees will be given the chance to go toe-to-toe at the Activision/id Software booth, in a sneak preview of the 4-player DOOM 3 out-of-the-box deathmatch experience."What better way to celebrate QuakeCon than to unveil to our fans a preview of DOOM 3 multiplayer," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. "While everyone knows that DOOM 3 is the most terrifying and scary single player experience ever created, multiplayer delivers the intense competitive action that our fans can count on. It's a natural to debut the DOOM 3 multiplayer experience at QuakeCon, the world's preeminent fan-based multiplayer gaming event." QuakeCon attendees will have the chance to sample DOOM 3's four-player Deathmatch on a level co-developed by id Software and U.K.-based developer Splash Damage, Ltd. Splash Damage has most recently worked with id Software on Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, and will be co-developing DOOM 3's multiplayer levels.

We have updated our DOOM 3 FAQ here at NewDoom.com with some of the latest information we have about the game. We have updated sections on demons/monsters, screenshots, editing tools, gaming platforms, min. computer specs, gameplay, animation, graphics cards. You can take a look for yourselves in our DOOM 3 FAQ section. Also don't forget to check out our DOOM 3 Shots.
Tiny Pistol
There are some shots, from various angles, of the minigun from the ZOOW: Alien Dimension project. Next in line are the MPG-7 and hopefully the Rambo dagger.
Prayers Are Answered
Sarge Baldy has posted two reviews on his Hardass Doom Reviews page. 'Home Is Where The Heart Burst' is described as an awful Doom II map based off someone's home. Cripes. The second is called nerves of steel. You'll have to find out what he thought of this yourselves.
Pray For Reviews
Your prayers are answered. No Poet has brought back his DOOM review website, Pray for Death. There are currently two reviews up - Fragport and Enigma - each written using a different review technique. Let him know which review style you prefer. No Poet has kept everyone's old review requests, so you just might see some of those covered in the future as well.
Doomsday
Skyjake has been working on the next version of Doomsday and has been concentrating on the renderer:After some experimentation, it became quite obvious that the way things are done at the moment is inappropriate when texture blending (smooth water/sludge/etc. animation) and custom textures for dynamic lights are concerned. Hitherto, the renderer has not supported multitexturing at all. This is rather a grave shortcoming since there are many situations where it can be used to speed up the rendering. A good example is the quite common case where a single dynamic light is lighting up a surface. With (the default) multiplicative lighting, this was rendered using three passes:- sector-lit surface without a texture
- Dynamic light polygon with additive blending, and
- Texture with no lighting and multiplicative blending.
With multitexturing, just one pass will suffice. There is more of this to read up on at the Doomsday HQ.
More Demos
Second batch of demos in four days for Opulent's Speed Demos Archive can mean one of two things. There is a lot of Demo activity out there or he had so much last time and could not be bothered to put them all up at once. Either way its all good news with Rich Sham, Maikl, Grazza and Neuhaus all putting in an appearence. Time to watch other people Dooming for a change.
Sonic Boom?
The Ultimate Doomer has update his Page Of Doom with a new playable demo of Super Sonic DooM. The changes are mentioned in the text file and they include bug fixes, improvements and new features.
Death Summond
Agent Spork has updated and revamped his website. It is now the official home for his Legacy megawad, Death Summoning. It says that you should click on the map info button for more information but unfortunately the link does not work. Head along to Death Summoning.
Kesler Dooms No More
Kurt kesler has updated A Place Of Doom with this:Just a small update to post a link to a zip file with all 42 of my wads. I'm doing it this way so I don't have to fix links on my downloads page. Call it what you want, but I'm not interested in maintaining this site anymore. I'm off to other engines, and have no intentions of looking back. That was to the point. He also says that their are none of his ZDoom maps in there and he has provided a seperate link for those.
Satans Gob
New stuff on the Hellmouth Project with Heretic reporting that all weapons are 100% complete. All that needs doing now is their pick-up counterparts. Another map - TheMouth has been started, and some old maps are being revamped. There are also some new screenshots to view.
Zoow
The Alien Dimension that is 'Zoow', has got some news on weapons. Here is what he had to say: Some new plans added to Stuff To Do list and plans. Check them out. When I stop doing these models, I'll start doing those things in the plans. I'll stop doing models, when:
· All weapons are done, that also includes new weapons that I hadn't even planned to have. · HUD hands/arms done(actually needs only a skin) · Scaled weapons and Humno'd to correct size. · Humno'd model is totally animated and some basic skins(including player skin) are done. · Animated HUD weapons/hands/arms. There I am glad thats been cleared up.
Outpost Doom
The Outpost of Doom II has updated with a review of "A Warm Place" by Richo Rosai. You can find this in the reviews section. There is also a small mention that he is working on Outpost of Hell 3. There is no word of this on the projects page but it should be updated soon.
DOOM III's Projected Profits
|
Category: Doom_III|x|id_Software |
GameDAILY is reporting that RBC Capital Markets has issued a research brief in advance of Activision's releasing financial details from its first quarter next Tuesday. One area RBC expresses some concern with is the release of Doom III, in development by id Software. The investment firm, citing the release schedules of various retail website (not the most reliable sources, but semi-useful for informative purposes), as now showing a Doom III release date in March of 2004, as opposed to a previously expected street date of this November.
RBC wonders how a later release of Doom III would affect Activision in the current fiscal year, as it has projected the anticipated PC game to contribute $68.0 million in revenues and $0.10 per share in Activision’s third-quarter and $26.0 million and $0.04 per share in the company’s fourth quarter. While RBC notes that a delay in the game’s release from the third to fourth quarter could result in a fiscal year drop of approximately $27.0 million in revenue, it adds that any loss would be merely tacked on to the next fiscal year’s results. Wow, clearly a lot is riding on this title we're all looking forward to. While we can't wait to get our playing mits on DOOM III, we're certainly hoping it's not another game that's released before 'it is done' for a publisher's financial concerns.
DOOM III Specs
Kaiser, who runs DSV Outworld here at NewDoom, has posted in our Doom III Forums about DOOM III's minimum specs. Here is what he had to say:Offical DOOM III Specs announced Here it is

5 Reviews
There are five reviews for you to browse through over at the DWS. Here is a snip: Doom Nemeisis by Eric Buck is the best of the lot with lots of action, tons of traps and some nice architectural design. Among the rest are Osama Bin Doom2 which is more a curiosity than a really well designed and thought out idea. Also, by the same author is Oreo Deathmatch - a very well thought out deathmatch level created for Legacy that allows the players to use the flying feature for Death from Above. There are two more on top of this so check them out.
Star Wars TC
XDelusion has emailed us to say that he has finally put up a site for his nameless Starwars Total Conversion. This will need the Legacy to run and he would like to here from anyone who is interested in helping with it. There is already a rather impressive array of screenshots amongst other things and there is more to come. Check it out at Starwars Doom Legacy Project.
Review Round up
Sarge Baldy has been knocking them out this week and has added an extra three reviews to his site. There is Phobia which is a wad for Legacy. There are also reviews for Rigel 1 and Big Boy. You can check them out and find the links at Sarge Baldy's Hardass Doom Reviews.

Chex Quest
There has been a post in our Forums about the Phase 1 release of Chex Quest. The Phase I version of my Chex Quest project is now available for download. The main feature of Phase I is that it combines Chex Quest 1 and Chex Quest 2 into a single pwad, with a hack patch, allowing the flemoids from both Chex Quests to exist side by side. You can get this from Boingo's Chex Quest Site.
Doom 3: The Legacy Interview
Here at NewDoom we realised that not everyone has a fast conection. So that left us wondering how does everyone see all the great Doom 3 stuff thats out there? The simple answer is not everyone does. Well hopefully this will help. We were given permission by Todd Hollenshead from ID.software to write a Transcript of 'Doom III The Legacy' interview. We have peppered this with some screen captures from the movie and we all hope you enjoy it.
Lick Of Paint
Kaiser has had the tins of paint out over at DSV Outworld and given the place a whole new look. There is also word that he has started on a new 32 level deathmatch wad which will be Boom-port compatible. But wait... there's more. He has also announced that the Doom 64 TC is now fully playable online, and without the crashes and errors!
Reviewed
Sarge Baldy has been busy over the last week posting reviews on four seperate days. He has recently finished 007: License To Spell Doom which is ready for you to read and yesterday added a review of one of his favourite Doom II maps Laitos. Read them, download them and play them at Sarge Baldy's Hardass Doom Reviews.

Whole Lotta Shaking
Mr. Rocket has released a new map for Legacy. It's close copy of the Quake 3 map Q3DM17. The only reason its not perfect is due to the limitations of the DOOM engine. You can get it from Mr.Rocket's Megasphere, just click on the maps page and it's at the top.
RE: View
Serge Baldy has updated his Hardass Doom Reviews with two reviews. The first is of a Doom II map, that will require the ZDoom port, Sin City. The second is a rather old one called Mines of Titan also for Doom II.

Connector Of DOOM
Gherkin has let us know that a few changes that have recently been applied to the online service. Here is what he had to say:Doom Connector got a major update; The main thing that changed is the public servers, which are now all displayed with the custom-game rooms. They also act the same way, you can enter the room, see who's playing, have a fancy chat and join the game. All updates are downloaded and installed automatically when Doom Connector starts. For a list of changes, see the changelog on the website. Doom Connector also got some changes in "rules"; Spamming and flaming will no longer be tolerated in the lobby. People can do so in their own room(s), but any attempt in the lobby will be rewarded with kicks or bans. Well, he can't be any clearer than that. If you don't have it already, then surf to XODE Multimedia's Doom Connector page.
New Reviews
The Doom Wad Staition has 5 new reviews written by Blue Paladin. The reviews are of South Park Doom2, Short and Quick and Short and Quick 2 as well as Mummy Phuquer and Mummy3d. Read on and download.
Doomsday Version 1.7.11
Doomsday Version 1.7.11 has been released. Skyjake says that this is only a bugfix and here is the rest: This week's Net Tests brought up some bugs that would've otherwise gone unnoticed. Thanks for your time, testers! I hope there are no critical bugs left in this final release of 1.7.11.
I've changed the default savegame directories so that each game mode has its own subdirectory under the main Run\Game\savegame directory. Doing this was necessary in order to prevent mixups between savegames from different modes. For example, Doom II savegames will now be stored in Run\jDoom\savegame\doom2. You will need to manually move your existing savegame files into the new directories, or they won't show up in the menus (unless you use the -savedir option to change the default directory back to Run\Game\savegame). You can download the latest version from Doomsday HQ.
Super Sonic
The Ultimate Doomer has refreshed his Page Of Doom with the news that, with the aid of a complete drawn up blueprint, he has started work on his plutonia II map. He has also added a new weapon to Super Sonic Doom without replacing any of the other weapons in use.
Doom Forever
Jetflock has announced the release of Doom Forever on our Forums. It contains two level replacements of Map01 and Map04. There are also some new textures and most of the guns have received a cosmetic overhaul. You can find this wad at Doom Forever.
Doomed Winamp
Fallen Man has posted in the Forums about a Doom III skin for Winamp. This is from a website called Breed Art and is only available for Winamp 2.
Vendetta Review
Ismaele has updated his site with a review of Alien Vendetta. This has been a while coming but its all wrapped up and waiting for you. Also you can take a look at some screenshots of his Hellcore level. The shots do not show that much of the level but show off some of the detail. This can all be found the Outpost Of Doom.
Doomsday Net Test 2nd Edition
Skyjake has posted on the Doomsday HQ that the Net Test 2 snapshot is now available. Here are some of the changes made:· The server no longer sends the coordinates of predictably moving missiles in each frame. This fixes the problem with the movement of missiles being jittery on clientside. It also reduces the size of the average frame packet.
· On clientside, destroyed mobjs still emitted particles. This happened for example in Heretic's E1M8.
· The client was sending too much data to the server. A quick test (with the huffman command) shows that in one minute, the client now sends about 12 KBs, which means roughly 0.2 KB/s.
· In jHeretic, if the client held down the Speed control (Shift) while Use Artifact (Enter) was pressed, it was interpreted as a jump command. This is now fixed. One importent note is that this latest version does not work with the DOOM 64 TC. You will need to continue using version 1.7.10 in order to play it. Read all the other changes at the Doomsday HQ.
Redemption
Gene Bird has just released Redemption, which is the 12th map in the Blind Alley series for Doom 2. He describes the map as 'A very fun play with decent scenery'. There is no port needed to run this map, but there is a Legacy version 1.40 UV max demo of the level included in the zip file. Read more on this in the Forums.
Birthday Recess
Chris has reached the grand old age of 23 as of yesterday. As part of the celebration he has updated the Doomers Recess with some screenshots sent to him by Kristian Aro. The level will, according to Kristian himself, be very actionpacked and will haunt the player with lots of Chaingunners and Arch Viles. He has also written a very good new midi track for the level. There are three screenshots in total and chris has also updated his Great Downloads section.
Doom 64 Arrives
You did read the title right the Doom 64 tc has arrived. The wad needs the Doomsday engine to run and is an 18.9 megabyte download. This is just for the levels, textures and sprites. The music for the tc is a bit bigger at 52.4 megs. The TC itself has been put together in a little over a year, which when you consider the quality is a job well done. I won't say anymore just go get it at the Doom Depot.
