DLW
Doom Legacy Wads have three 3 Doom1 megawads for your pleasure, courtesy of Jive. DarkHell, Nj_Soh1, abd G-B-Arch are the ones in question, and all are complete episode 2 wads (E2M1-E2M9).
Late Wad Scandle
DoomarenA has updated with a screenshot from the latest work. This is running a little late at the moment as you will see from the screenshot. Check it out and be baffled no more.
Karthik's Bigging It Up
Karthik's DOOM Pages have updated with quite a lot of stuff. There are unfortunately to be no more reviews for a while due to lack of time. But he does go on to say this:That does NOT mean there will never again be another review on this site, who knows, one day you might just see a few new reviews pop up on the site! And I will still mention WADs that I found interesting to play, in my updates. So not all bad. There are also two new Pictures added and there are also two new wallpapers. So get along to Karthik's DOOM Pages.
Carmack On Graphics
John Carmack has updated his plan with some words on the Matrox Parhelia graphics card. Here are some of those words:The executive summary is that the Parhelia will run Doom, but it is not performance competitive with Nvidia or ATI. Driver issue remain, so it is not perfect yet, but I am confident that Matrox will resolve them. The performance was really disappointing for the first 256 bit DDR card. I tried to set up a "poster child" case that would stress the memory subsystem above and beyond any driver or triangle level inefficiencies, but I was unable to get it to ever approach the performance of a GF4. For the full report just click on the .plan on the left.
DSV Scripted
I dropped by DSV Outworld today and found this:During my free time I whipped up a neat utility called DeScriptED. What this little thing does, is start up a script for you, can edit FS, ACS, DEH, and BEX files, and also comes with a reference that can easily be viewed. Also has a compiler launcher so you won't have to go through those annoying bat files. Especially for Win2k and Xp users. Check out the download section.
Newdoom Poll
What's the thing about Doom 3 that you look forward to most? That was the title of the poll that has just ended. The results were a little suprising. At the bottom of the poll was Modifying with 5.8%. A little strange considering that the community is built around mapping. This was less than Who cares? with 9.5%.
Graphics engine came top with 54.5% which far and away outstripped the closest rival which was Storyline with 18.4%. This goes to show the kind of influence Half-Life has had on FPS games since the original Doom games had no real storyline at all.
Nestling bang in the middle was Multiplayer with 11.7% which means that most people are just looking forward to sitting in a dark room and experiencing the single player aspect or nobody likes Multiplayer anymore.
Escomod
Escomod has arrived, so the email said, and a demo should be available soon. Personally I could not understand a word of it so good luck.
Why v0.6
Why version 0.6 'Midsummer release' is now out. New features include the possibility to open several wads at the same time, a raw lump editor and full BOOM support.

Doom III Gamer
PCGamer has hit the streets in the UK and splashed all over the front cover is ID's Doom III. This is the first time it has appeared in a magazine in such depth. The article spans five pages with screenshots and there is even a piece about the original two. Here are a few snippets from that paticular artical:·Doom nearly ruined the academic careers of most people who work for Future Publishing ·We might hold up Half-Life as a reference point for all our first person games today, but deep down in our souls it was Doom that set the flame burning. Available at most good newsagents.

Carmack / Reznor Interview
Wired has posted up a an interview with Trent Reznor and John Carmack about the game and the role of storytelling in the first-person shooter genre. This is in audio format so you can listen rather than read the interview. Thanks to Lyall Williams who sent this in.
Curse You Hell
Hell's Curse is a project with about a years work done to it. Now they have a webpage up so you can all have a good look. There are 12 levels already completed with the rest being worked on slowly. They are looking for people who can make textures, or good menus for Doom2.
Making j's Into H's And Q's
Since Jaakko 'SkyJake' Keranen has unified his three Doomsday Engine ports: jDoom, jHeretic and jHexen, into one entity, we've decided to unify the disparate sites for all three ports into the all new, fully combined Doomsday HQ site. So, rather than posting pretty much the same updates on each of the old 'j sites', as he's been doing for the last several months, Jaakko has put together a nice new main headquarters, still hosted by the same fine folks who bring you NewDoom, Raven-Games and many other quality sites under the Mindless Games & Entertainment umbrella. Enjoy, and be sure to update your links: www.doomsdayhq.com.
DLW Trio
Doom Legacy Wads has updated with three new wads. RetroEps: E1M1-E1M9, CrayEd2 : E1M1-E1M5 and PolsDic : E1M1-E1M8. In each, you can find a "dfl" file to use KDX easily, a dehacked file for authors & levels names (when they exist), and a "HTML" file for the screenshots.
Kill Episode 2
Team Kill has announced that Episode 2 is now in beta stage and should be ready in about a week or so.
News Roundup
In case you noticed the lack of updates this week, there was a good reason for it. You see, I slipped a disk in my back, and although it is nowhere near right, I could not leave you without the news for any longer. So, here is a quick roundup of the news that landed on my desktop.
· Karthik's DOOM Pages updated with a a Doom Drawings Gallery

· Doom Heaven has a new Hi-Tech looking death match level for Legacy called When the Sleeper Wakes.

Carmack DOOM III Comments
id Software's engine maestro John Carmack has been posting over on SlashDot again lately, and this time he comments on his reasoning behind targeting high-end hardware with DOOM III. Here's a big ol' blockquote for ya's:We know for sure that we will be excluding some of the game buying public with fairly stiff hardware requirements, but we still think it is the right thing to do.
The requirement for GF1/Radeon 7500 as an absolute minimum is fundamental to the way the technology works, and was non-negotiable for the advances that I wanted to make. At the very beginning of development, I worked a bit on elaborate schemes to try and get some level of compatibility with Voodoo / TNT / Rage128 class hardware, but it would have looked like crap, and I decided it wasn't worth it.
The comfortable minimum performance level on this class of hardware is determined by what the artists and level designers produce. It would be possible to carefully craft a DOOM engine game that ran at good speed on an original SDR GF1, but it would cramp the artistic freedom of the designers a lot as they worried more about performance than aesthetics and gameplay.
Our "full impact" platform from the beginning has been targeted at GF3/Xbox level hardware. Slower hardware can disable features, and faster hardware gets higher frame rates and rendering quality. Even at this target, designers need to be more cognizant of performance than they were with Q3, and we expect some licensee to take an even more aggressive performance stance for games shipping in following years.
Games using the new engine will be on shelves FIVEYEARS (or more) after the initial design decisions were made. We had a couple licensees make two generations of products with the Q3 engine, and we expect that to hold true for DOOM as well. The hardware-only decision for Q3 was controversial at the time, but I feel it clearly turned out to be correct. I am confident the target for DOOM will also be seen as correct once there is a little perspective on it.
Unrelated linux note: yes, there will almost certainly be a linux binary for the game. It will probably only work on the nvidia drivers initially, but I will assist any project attempting to get the necessary driver support on on other cards. Hope you enjoyed that. Head to said SlashDot thread for more info.
