Eternity has updated with the later than expected release of the Eternity Engine v3.29 Public Beta 4. Changes listed as follows:
1. Added an MBF demo compatibility fix to the P_CanUnlockGenDoor prboom bug fix.

2. Added demo compatibility to some long reflection code (shouldn't happen in old demos anyways, but its still a good idea).

3. Enhanced lost soul bouncing demo fix with new prboom code.

4. Added EV_VerticalDoor prboom fixes, but customized code to work without rewriting the whole function (not enough time or good enough reason).

5. Added cph's bobbing fix to use the old method when playing old demos

 Happy 5th Birthday Quake!
 Posted by at 7:00 PM
Category: General

To celebrate the 5th anniversary of Quake's release, Methos Quake has posted a lengthy article detailing the game's history and how it changed the gaming world. Also included in the article are exclusive interviews with John Romero and Tim Willits.

Romero: Quake's design was VERY different from the game that was released. It was much more of a D&D-based game with a main character named Quake who
had an awesome hammer that would grow in power as the game progressed. At one point in November 1995, we decided to change the design to something we were more comfortable creating -- FPS weapons with a few twists. After the major redesign, the game underwent a few more smaller redesigns (to cut down development time) and we released the Quake that everyone knows today.

An interesting read. Go have a look!

Get Ready To Say Bye-Bye To Pop-Ups!
Posted by William 'Phoebus' Mull at 7:00 PM
Category: General

That's right! Those of you who visit this site are going to have to start doing without some things.... but I'm 100% sure nobody's going to miss them! At the end of this month, no more of those ultra-uncool, perpetually annoying (or is that annoyingly perpetual?), maniacally-multiplying..... ever-evil pop-ups! That's when the campaign is set to end, and I'm upholding my end of the bargain by holding out until then before I get rid of them. But that little experiment gone wrong will be a thing of the past! And there was much rejoicing......

 Blast From The Past!
Posted by William 'Phoebus' Mull at 7:00 PM
Category: General

Jaakko of jDoom fame (remember him? sends word from out of the blue, that he rebuilt the jDoom site from scratch. The new page is much more aesthetically pleasing, so be sure to check that out. Here's more from Jaakko:

The old webpage was awful from the beginning. I decided to do something about it and behold: the new jDoom page has been born. IMHO it's a considerable improvement compared to the old one.
It's been almost six months since my last update, but unfortunately the Army service has taken up almost all my time so there has been no progress with the Doomsday project. All this will change on June 29th, when my service is finally over. For me the nearly 12 months I've now spent in the Army have just flown by. It's really amazing. I hope the wait hasn't been too long from your point of view.

So, what's next? The plan is now to finish Doomsday 1.0 and iron out the worst bugs in jDoom and jHeretic so they'll earn the 1.0 version number as well. Then it's time to return to jHexen and upgrade it, too, but that's quite a laborious task... jHexen has been unattended for far too long, now.

So, expect some exciting new file downloads in the coming weeks!

 Shockwave Doom
 Posted by at 7:00 PM
Category: General

Barry Swab has updated his site with the news he's working on a 3D game that uses Doom Wads as the level format. The interesting thing about this is, he's doing it in Shockwave! so it will:

- Run on PC's and Macs
- Run embedded in websites
- Use hardware acceleration (DX7, DX5 or Open GL)
- Have new features (arbitrary models, lighting etc)

He's planning on releasing a version for anyone to embed on their web-page, possibly with a loader so they can create their own Wads, upload them, and let anyone view them from their site!
Is that cool or what?

Well thats what it says over at CFGN. There is a large piece in Adam's Rave asking if id.software still rule the roost when it comes to 3d games. Here is a small excerpt.
So will we be seeing the old ID shinning through with original and excessively fun gameplay? If it’s anything to go by their last 3 releases then all we can expect is, nice new graphics, same dull gameplay.

Files Section / Review Center Downtime

I apologize for the Files Section / Review Center's downtime the last few days, but we're in the middle of switching everything to a new, much improved Linux server (the old server was using NT), and we also discovered a nasty memory leak in the asp code the Files Section had been built upon. So, we're rewriting the Files Section / Review Center in PHP w/ mySQL database (the old code had no database), so as you can imagine, this opens up a whole new world for us! Hopefully by the end of the week, we'll have these sections back up and you'll begin to see some of the fruits of our labors! In the meantime, feel free to vent in our Forums.

Reviews, Scrapped Contests, TOJ, Cds And Football...Oh My!

Metabolist has updated his site with a review of Jon Washburn's The Corrupt Priest. In other news, he has decided to drop the Weird Wad Contest he's been running due to the fact no one entered. TOJ is being converted over to Doom2 because levels can be more easily organised and continuity better maintained. He also mentions his CDs will soon be on sale and goes on a little rant regarding his favorite football team.

 Rellik's Dream Editor
 Posted by at 7:00 PM
Category: General

Rellik sends word he has rounded up eleven (!) coders offering to help him build his dream editor. It will use WinDEU as the base and will function much like WadEd. Now you may be asking yourself, just how did he manage to scare up so many people willing to work on his project in a small community like Doom's. Simple. Bribery. He offered up his Tin Box Quake 3 and his autographed Team Arena to the individual(s) who can make his wish of a stable WadEd-like editor that runs under Windows come true. So go on over to his website and check out everything he has planned.
