My Doom III Impressions At E3
Posted by William 'Phoebus' Mull at 10:50 AM
Category: General

Eerie, gory, and disturbing only begins to describe my impressions Thursday, as I stumbled out of the little makeshift theater of the DOOM III booth! The 5.1 sound made a huge difference in enhancing the overall experience, so if you've just seen one of the online movies from the show, you're only getting a hint of the full effect. For instance, you hear all the juicy details as an updated version of the pink Demon digs into the raw belly of a fallen fat-bald man. You watch in a mix of terror and sick intrigue as it feasts on the entrails. There's no pixelated or other buffer of artificiality to relieve your senses that this is just a game and isn't real. The soon-to-be zombie's lifeless body moves realistically against the floor as it's being torn assunder.

As for DOOM III's gameplay, I would have to compare it to Resident Evil meets Quake II. Integrated cut-scenes are effectively integrated with live action, giving an impressive cinematic feel that emphasizes a very real sense of dread I haven't felt since the original Doom. In one such memorable moment, your character takes shelter in a dark corner as a hellish monstrosity lumbers by, following its own shadow in search of fresh marine meat. You can almost feel your character hoping to god it doesn't smell your own blood, mingled with the literal bloodbath all around you.

There is no happy ending to this scenario.

Welcome back to the fear of Hell that is DOOM!

 Doom III From E3
Posted by Jason 'FACE.UK' Sloan at 6:41 PM
Category: General

Gamespot has a report on Doom III from E3. There is a description of the demo that was shown. Here is a snippet:
The characters' facial expressions were quite lifelike as they exchanged dialogue. But what was even more impressive was the subtle detail that could be seen in their individual skin tones and complexions. It's no exaggeration to say that these are easily some of the most realistic-looking 3D real-time-rendered characters ever seen in a game. The quality of the character models--and actually, even the visual design of their high-tech armor--is comparable to what can be seen in last year's computer-animated sci-fi feature film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.
I don't see what all the fuss is about......ARE YOU KIDDING!!! you can download the video from here but be warned it is a 97MB beast. There is a low res version available which is only 8.4MB.

That's a mouthful; now, check it out for yourselves!

 Mod Class Begins
Posted by Jason 'FACE.UK' Sloan at 12:44 AM
Category: General

Picklehammer Music has announced the start of Mod Classes. Here is the blurb:
The aim of MOD class is to train in the art of module music. Module music is music made with a tracker-interface which is similar to midi in that it can be re-touched at will and has an efficient file-size, but can have better quality than an mp3. The smallest MODs are chiptunes, which are small because of their samples. The size of the file depends on the quality of the samples themselves. To integrate a MOD into a doom wad, the filesize should be small to ensure that people aren't turned off because of a long download.

MOD class itself is a week of you, the musician, practicing what I set you out to do. Eventually, you'll come up with a good song. I will put all the songs into one large mp3 as well as post links to download the MOD. Include a text file with each MOD with your name/contact information and anything you learned or had trouble with.
Picklehammer also has a new eamil address picklehammer@dungeonsiegecenter.com.

 ZenNode 1.1.0
Posted by Jason 'FACE.UK' Sloan at 12:36 AM
Category: General

It has been 1 year and 1 day since the last update for ZenNode but there has now been enough work to warrent a new version. This version now uses floating point math in the BSP builder which does make it a little slower but was necessary because of newer OpenGL ports of DOOM. This release fixes most causes of holes in ceiling/floor textures in OpenGL games. It should also handle .wad files with Fragglescripts properly.
Thanks to Jive for pointing this out.
