Karthik's Place One Year Old

Planet of the Imps Back On Track!
Planet Of The Imps the web comic devoted so lovingly to Doom, but has been on hiatus for nearly four months, is finally back in action! A new comic strip is on display every day, and the website is getting a lot of changes as well (new gfx, added sections, diff layout). After 100 comics, Zack doesn't know if he'll continue or not--it depends on the feedback he gets. Email Zack and let him know what you think of his site. He also says he may be writing a review for Wolfenstein 3D for the Gameboy Advance soon, so keep your eyes open. ;)
id Redesign
Check it out, the guys over at id Software have finally redesigned their website. Unfortunately, there's no news on the New Doom game... but then I didn't really think there would be. Thanks to Planky who sent us this news.
Why Editor Update
Jussi Pakkanen has updated the Why homepage with this little lot:This version has a few minor tweaks and one major new feature: the super easy, ultra efficient sector splitter tool. It is so simple that I can explain it with just two images. First you select the vertices that are the basis of the split. Then just select the splitter from the pop-up menu and you're done. All the crossings in between are calculated and added automatically and proper sidedef references are maintained throughout. The tool can handle anything, such as donut sectors, areas that are outside sectors etc. Don't ask Why, just download it.
jDoom II?
Jaakko has let us know that he is working on the next version of jDoom. He does say that there is going to be little progress over the coming weeks as he has exams to finish. Here is some of what he had to say:Last weekend I implemented LOD handling for the 3D models. It was quite fun to write a triangle mesh optimizer for md2tool and I think it turned out quite decent (about 40%-60% reduction of triangle count with acceptable results, at the maximum level). The MD2 model format has no support for LOD, though, which lead into a new model format, which I call DMD (Detailed MoDel, or Detailed MD2). The format is basically the same as with MD2, but there can be an arbitrary number of extra triangle lists and GL commands, each constituting a LOD. The next release of Doomsday can use MD2s and DMDs interchangeably. Sounds good.
Boing, Boing, Boing
The Epidermis Emporium has had 62 new skins added to the site, bringing the total number of skins available up to 302. Skins have been added to all catergories.

Wim's Mini Mega Wad
The Mole's Lair breaks a two month silence with news on his 'highly classified top-secret multi-level episode'. This has now been renamed 'Mini-Level Megawad'. This will not be a full 32 levels but only eleven in total and the levels themselves will be quite short. There are new enemies and Wim has posted two new screenshots.
Edge Not Dead
EDGE has been updated. This is to inform us all of what has been happening over the last five months. There is also a list of what Darkknight would like to do next with the edge engine. He also talks about the addition of the new updated wad format called WD2. Currently the format employed by the Doom Engine is on the primitive side of things and editing it wrongly can cause major hassle. With a new format we can fix these inconsistencies with a new directory structure. I suspect that EDGE will support this new format WAD (named WD2) on the next release. Developers will be provided with tools and in the same way that EDGE converts maps to the glBSP format, conversion will similally take place from WAD to WD2. Like all developments, if it proves popular it will become the standard. There is also news on the multiplayer front with development of networking code for EDGE begining after the remain DDF files have been completed.

The Guardian
Presage has been updated with news that Gonzalo has updated his section of the site. This update contains the release of 'The Guardian' his latest and possibly his last Doom level. Unfortunately I don't have much time for Doom anymore, so the Alley will stop here for some time. Hopefully I'll get back to Doom in the future, but that's something I can't assure now. My maps will still be available for download, and of course I'll let you know if things change. Hoping that this break is shorter than I expect but fearing it won't, I'll take the chance to thank all doomers that helped me and encouraged me during these years, and to wish the Doom community a long and intense life, specially with the new Doom coming soon... Check all this at Presage.

Doom Heaven

New jDoom
There seems to be no stopping Jaakko Keränen at the moment as jDoom gets another update bringing it up to version 1.13.0. The netcode has been polished up a little.
