Doom Rampage Rocks On

No need to worry though as the team continues to work and [OFoD]Jippy will be doing the voices for the marines while [OFoD]Doom Rampage is heavy into the mapping. Well I know what that's like. You get knee deep into the sector squishing and all sorts of stuff happens. Seriously. Now go forth and visit the Doom Rampage Edition site.
Risen3D Pops Up With Back To Back News Items
|
Category: DOOM Sourceports |
Our hosted site for the Risen 3D port has a dual update. Seems I missed the update on the 29th and there's a new one for today. Anyhow the R3DLauncher was updated to fix a bug that prevented launching Risen 3D under certain directory structures. Make sure to get that fixed launcher as it's a real annoying bug I know. Next is the news that Abbspack version 3.01 was released. So get your Dooming carcass over to Risen 3D and get ported into some cool Doom crazyness.

Dr Sleep let me know in an email that he's finished his Doom Builder Guide. He updated his site with the news so go to Dr Sleep's DOOM Apothecary and see whats up with that. You can get the guide right here on Dr Sleep's site or you can get it on CodeImp's site right here. The guide is 131 pages long, includes illustrations and is in pdf format so you'll need Adobe's acrobat reader to view the guide. You can also view the guide online (you still need acrobat) and the link for that is available on Dr Sleep's DOOM Apothecary. Furthermore Dr Sleep reports on his site that he's back into working on his maps now that the guide is done.

ZooM Production Isn't Zooming Along
I just noticed that the ZooM site was updated and things are going slow with the mod. Hopefully they'll get back into gear soon. Meanwhile there is a downloadable test of ZooM and it's recommended at the time being to run it using ZDooM. Remember that the test isn't an official demo and it's more or less for bug reporting. Just so you know, ZooM is a racing mod that combines elements of both deathmatch and speedrunning and it doesn't feature any vehicles.

Carmack Speaks AT GDC (D3 Pretty Close To Release)
I was going to shacknews.com in a look for some stuff for MGE when I spotted a link to this article on homelanfed.com. The article talks about John Carmack speaking at the Game Developers Conference in front of a large audience. This new article reports that no new Doom 3 footage was shown but does say that John Carmack said the game was "pretty close" to release. Furthermore Carmack confirmed that id is already thinking about their next first person shooter project after Doom III is due. Go, go read that article already!! He said... Doom 3 Pretty Close to release! Cool! [edit] More looking around reveals this article on computerandvideogames.com that confirms that Doom 3 is near and contradicts the Quake II info of the first article. I think the info about them 'thinking' about doing a revamp of Quake II and then deciding 'not to' is the correct news.
Pray For Death Goes On Hiatus
We just got word from No Poet that he's putting the updates to Pray For Death on hold for a period of two weeks. Once this period of time has expired he will come back for a big update with a massive 20 new reviews. He also says this:To anyone who has submitted work or review requests to me, I will be in contact shortly. Pray for Death's closure is not permanent and has not been prompted by negative feedback. I haven't even had so much as a flame in the last three months. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong! So that's the word from No Poet. Getcha self over to Pray For Death for the rest of what he has to say.
SRB2 Progress Report
|
Category: DOOM Conversions |
Here is the latest blurb going on over at the Sonic Robo Blast II website:I suppose it's only fair that I give you guys an update as to what's going on. I've been very preoccupied with life in general this year, and haven't touched SRB2 too much. Fortunately, a441 and Mystic have been making progress, with my input. * Yes there is going to be a 1.09. I'm sure you're sick of the delays, but 1.09 will tide all of the mappers out there who want to do all sorts of crazy things. * 1.1 is going to be the final SRB2. Yeah, you heard me, final. Hopefully as many zones as we can get done. Will it happen? I hope so! It would be nice. If haven't already take a look at this cos it's rather good.

Doom 3 Voiceover Sessions
Newdoomers are quick to spot Doom 3 news these days. This time around PumpkinSmasher let us know that gamespy.com has a new article up that features info on Doom 3's voice acting. gamespy.com caught up with Activision and id Software in a southern California sound studio as they recorded voiceovers for id's upcoming horrorfest. Here is a slice of the article:The last actor we saw was Jim Ward, who actually voiced many of the German soldiers in Call of Duty, and also played several roles in Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando and The Hobbit. Once again, the actor was called upon to do a variety of roles -- an engineer, a marine, etc -- and ran through all the lines effortlessly. To read the rest of this cool, two page article go right here.

4 Times More DWS Stuff
Sematary has been busy on the Doom Wad Station. He updated 4 times since I did his news last. First off he mentions what is coming to a PC near you (what can that be?? Quake IV? Thief III?) then goes on to talk about a Doom 3 trailer, which is something he reposted and also mentions a new area on Doom Wad Station. Last but not least Blue Paladin did anouther fine wad review and this time he's gone and done up Tolwyn's Outpost Recon for Doom 2. Oh and I had to root around for the Bloodworks page.
Doom 3 System Requirements
While looking around for MGE news I found this article on Doom 3's system requirements on Filefront. It seems Filefront discovered an interview that PCGames had with John Carmack. Filefront had to do a bit of translating from German to get this particular information. Anyhow here is the core info:- A video card with at least 128MB RAM and Pixel Shader 1.1 support is required.
- A 2.5GHz CPU should be enough for the stencil shadows and physics calculations.
- The testing phase might last till summer or even later this year.
- DOOM 3 will be released on 4 CDs.
- Multiplayer will include Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Tournament and Last Man Standing.
So now it looks more likely that we'll be waiting through the Summer and into the Fall before we can get into the real Doom 3 goodness. [Update] We got word that Planetdoom contacted id software and they have replied saying that the information that appeared in the article is totally false and a fabrication on the magazine's part. Thanks Lars for pointing this out. Just goes to show you can't believe everything you read.
Vicarious Visions Interview
Gamepro posted up a new interview with Vicarious Visions. Here is a slice of the interview:Our biggest addition for the Xbox is the ability to play the single player game with a friend in co-op mode. We’re also modifying and balancing combat and demon behaviours to present challenging, but not frustrating encounters while still maintaining the action, intensity and terror of Doom 3. There’s a ton of work going into the balance and pacing of the game as well as the control mechanisms -– the player needs to feel connected with the game and a part of the environment in order to suspend their disbelief and really draw them into the atmosphere and terror of the game. We also draw players in with true Dolby 5.1 surround sound support -– there’s nothing scarier than hearing a Demon sneaking up from behind you. Vicarious Visions is the developer bringing Doom 3 to the Xbox. Sure seems to be a lot of Doom 3 Xbox related news lately.
History of Video Game Controversy Article
Gamespot has a huge article called When Two Tribes Go to War: A History of Video Game Controversy and of course there is a section just on Doom itself. Here is a slice of the article:Doom spawned on December 10, 1994--the brainchild of John and Adrian Carmack (no relation), John Romero, and others to varying degrees of involvement. The first-person shooter gained instant respect among gamers as a fast, serious, thrilling game. It had depth and was well designed. You played as a Marine, trapped on Mars, whose only hope for survival was to slash through hordes of aliens as hungry to waste him as he was to waste them. From this initial installment, Doom grew into an online mecca, and at the time of this writing a new edition is being produced for the Xbox and PC, due "soon." It's a long read if you check out the entire thing. Thanks to Aliotroph? for spotting the article and sending word about it.

id Software Interview Part 2
Ok you crazy Doomers Gamepro posted up part 2 of thier interview with id Software. Here is a clipping from the 2nd part of the interview:People have a warm fuzzy feeling from Doom, I guess -- or maybe a terrifying feeling -- but they have a good memory of Doom, and I think what we have to do is not necessarily try to copy that or make something exactly the same from a feeling perspective, but give them a new experience that is reminiscent of Doom -- they know that's an Arch-Vile or an Imp or whatever. But if you look at the Imp now from the Imp then...you ask somebody who didn't know: "Is that the same character?" No, of course not. They're so far removed from each other that if we really provide people with a scary, terrifying experience that is Doom 3, they're going to be happy and they're going to say, "That's a great experience. Maybe it's not that good as what I remember Doom to be," and it probably won't be, just because they're so far removed from each other. Go and read the interview already. Remember to keep your eyebones peeled here for more Doom 3 news.
id Software Interview Part 1
Gamepro posted up part one of a new informative and interesting interview with id Software. Here is a slice of the interview:GP: How hard is it to keep all this stuff a secret?
MS: I don't think we necessarily "maintain secrecy." Our general philosophy is when it comes to giving out information about the game, we try to pace ourselves. We try to pick opportunities and we use those opportunities efficiently and effectively as opposed to just a general seep of information out to the public -- you can get into trouble with that. You can get into issues with overhype or giving away too much. We have some characters -- obviously, bosses, we try to keep completely under wraps and leave some surprises for the player. Unless they've looked at all the publications, most players won't have quite the understanding of the story, and we want some things to surprise the player. You hate watching a movie trailer where you say, "Why do I need to go see the movie? I just got the Cliffs Notes version of the movie." But we've been working on the game now for a few years, and I think if you basically started from the beginning with an onslaught of information, you get yourself into trouble with a number of ways. Make sure to read both pages and keep your eyes peeled here on newdoom for the news when they upload part 2 of the interview as we'll be sure to let you know it's ready to check out.

Nvidia Teams Up With Doom 3
I saw on Blues News that Nvidia says that their hardware has been designated the ideal platform for DOOM 3 (a distinction that will presumably continue even after the game is released). Nvidia sayeth:NVIDIA is pleased to announce that id Software recommends the GeForce FX family of graphics processing units for DOOM 3. The rich feature set and programmability of GeForce FX GPUs enable the griping world of DOOM 3 to come to life with real-time dynamic lighting and shadow, while raw horsepower delivers non-stop multi-player action at lightning-fast frame rates. Look for this sticker on video cards equipped with a GeForce FX GPU, and witness the mind-blowing detail of the DOOM 3 experience - the way it's meant to be played. Check out the Doom 3 section on Nvidia's nzone. For the ign.com take on this news item check out this page.
Rex Goes Seriously Diablo
Rex climbed out of an HTML hole and updated his Rex's Nexus site with the news that he's been having fun, which I think means he's been playing Serious Sam and goofing around playing games and travelling to all sorts of places. Oh and there is a bit of Doom to all this. Seems that Rex started a new Doom 2 map called: Las Casa Del Diablo. Lets all jump onto Rex's Nexus and pump up the hits on his site.
