 Activision Says "When It's Done"
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:07 AM
Category: DOOM 3

On my daily rounds in search of various news items I discovered that ign.com contacted Activision itself about the rumors of an April release date for Doom 3. They are still saying that the game will be released "when it's done," and no official date has been set as of yet. So the only way for us to find out when it'll be released is to wait for the official word, obviously. You can read the item about this right here.

 Doomsday 1.8 Update
Posted by Alex 'Slide' Mitchell at 4:12 PM
Category: Hosted Site | Ports/Mods

Another week another alpha release of Doomsday 1.8, and Doom has never looked better and more importantly played better: mainly due to this being the first Alpha release that is actually playable!

The only thing upstaging this release is confirmation from Doomsday Engine author Skyjake of another set of new features that will appear by the time that 1.8 is finalised. These include: a newly integrated physics engine, more extended map features, new netcode and probably the feature most requested feature - MD3 support (Quake 3's model format - a much improved format that allows for more realistic models).

Don't expect it to work flawlessly and the linux version currently is not working (it is still alpha!) but you can see whats unfolding on Doomsday HQ right now!

As if that news wasn't enough, Dani confirmed his intention to update the very popular jDRP (jDoom Resource Pack) with enhanced md3 models.

 Kaiser Announces SvStrife Port
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 4:38 PM
Category: Hosted Site | Ports/Mods

First of all, I want to say there is no download or site to check out for this news item but felt it such interesting news that it deserved mentioning. Kaiser sent us an email to announce that the first experimental build of SvStrife, a Win32 source port re-creating the doom-based game Strife, will be released on the Ides of March. This build will include all functional weapons, sliding doors, and more. Now we have to wait until March... Meanwhile you can always head over to DSV Outworld and gather a few Doom maps from Kaiser's site.

 Gamespot D3 Article Mysteriously Disappears
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 2:04 PM
Category: DOOM 3

I was informed about a news item in relation to a new Doom III article on Gamespot that reported the game would be released on April 15th. So while I was gearing up to news the item in question the article itself mysteriously disappeared. So either it fell into a html hole or a bunch of Imps came along and fireballed it back to the stone age. Bluesnews sayeth about the elusive gamespot item:
Doom 3 due April 15 on Gamespot reveals what they call the "official," albeit still not officially announced ship date for the PC version of id Software's shooter sequel, attributing this information to an insider at Activision.
Meanwhile all we can do is wait and see when they actually do release the game. It'll be done "when its done" as id software has said already. It would be swheeeet to get the game in April but don't hold your breath because they may or may not actually do that. So what do we make of this? Well they (gamespot) said:
GameSpot learned that Activision may be planning to ship the PC Doom 3 on April 15
So now I may go get a burger and think about the possibility of Doom 3 in April. Doesn't mean I'm going to. :p

Doom Rampage Edition Is Still Alive
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:16 PM
Category: DOOM Wads

The Doom Rampage Edition site was updated and we got word from [OFoD]Doom Rampage with this info:
DRE is still alive. Doom Rampage Edition is nearing completion! All that is left is touchup on some maps, it has been in beta test for quite some time. and looking good. screen shots on the webpage. Added a new character called the commander. He has more of an acting role than a fighting role. He is in cut scenes that help set up the story with cameras, and dialog. His death in map 30 is quite disturbing. Anyway The website is in production so bear with me while I recover from a reformat.
Check out the Doom Rampage Edition site now to see what's up.

 Nvidia Doom 3 Vouchers?
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 1:59 PM
Category: General

I was surfing around the net looking for Mindlessgames News when I spotted this crazy bit of DooM 3 related news. According to theinquirer.net Nvidia is going to ship a Doom 3 voucher with its latest cards. They're saying, and here is a quote from the inquirer site:
As ATIlla got Half Life 2, it was natural to assume that Nvidia had to ship Doom 3, Unreal Tournament 2004 or some similar title to win some market share back.
Well whatever the truth is, all the speculation in the world will never reveal whatever that may be. This isn't official Doom 3 news that we know about but just a bit of something to gander at while waiting for the game itself. Heh.

Where is all this news coming from all of a sudden? Anyhow, today I noticed on CodeImp's Doom Builder site that version 1.53 has been released. View the new changes on the Changes page and get Doom Builder for all your Doom related editing needs. IMHO it's the best Doom editing device around and if you haven't checked it out yet your probably not into editing Doom at all or you just like something else.

 Important WhackED2 Update
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:04 AM
Category: DOOM Editing

Exl dropped us an email to let us know that he's updated WhackED2 with one rather important bug fix. This is what Exl has to say about this fix:
I'm fixing an old issue in the 0.50.166 release concerning the state editor and Lit flags\Sprite frames. However this isn't the only thing I've done in the past months on WhackEd2 - this update comes from a source code backup of the 0.50.166 version in which only the Lit bug is fixed. A few minor changes were also already present in the source code, (the beginnings of BEX support), but I disabled them.
So off to the WhackED2 you must go if you want the latest version.

 Doomsday 1.8 and 1.7 Updates
Posted by Alex 'Slide' Mitchell at 4:25 AM
Category: Hosted Site | Ports/Mods

The new update to the 1.7 branch of Doomsday is now available from Doomsday HQ. This release resolves some issues with custom music tracks compiled within PK3s (Doomsday's native file format). Also, the possibility of emulating Boom support via a precompilier and Doomsday's own map extensions have become a real possibility.

Work on the all new 1.8 branch of Doomsday continues at a pace with a second Alpha release, which (while essentially unplayable) really shows off the game's powerful new graphics engine (both using the previously mentioned FakeRadio radiosity engine, and also the new HQ2x texture filter), a new sound system and an all new player control system (which is still not fully working) that will facilitate an oft-requested feature: Split Screen multiplayer!

With a Linux variant of Doomsday also appearing in 1.8 it looks like the already dominant Doomsday Engine and its author Skyjake are certainly not resting on their laurels.
