 Ultimate SSD
Posted by Jason 'FACE.UK' Sloan at 6:30 PM
Category: General

The Ultimate Doomers Page Of Doom has updated with this:
I am now suspending work on Super Sonic DooM, due to the fact I will be away from my PC for a few weeks (which also means I won't be able to review in newstuff for that time either). I'm about half-way through the third map, so I have uploaded one screenshot of it.
It also mentions that the No Poet has decided to discontinue his review site and that the links page has been updated.

 jDoom Connector
Posted by Jason 'FACE.UK' Sloan at 2:53 PM
Category: General

Gherkin has posted that the next release of Doom Connector will contain support for jDoom. Here is what was said:
I have recently built jDoom support for Doom Connector (which is to be released very soon). The server- cvars all work nice, though, im missing a few. I already got the default server- cvars from jdoom.cfg. Are there any server- cvars for fraglimit, timelimit and possibly other multiplayer settings?
If you can help, then head along to Doom Connector.

 Lost Doom Sites
Posted by Jason 'FACE.UK' Sloan at 12:06 PM
Category: General

More of those sites from the mysts of time......
· Gestalt666 Resource
This place was recently updated just to fix a few links but the content has not really changed in five years. More interesting though is that this site was run by John Bye who you may recall made some maps for the Darkening project.

· Sharx Place
This page has an extensive editing section, also there are seven of his own wads with screenshots.

· Jez's Homepage
Jez's Homepage consists of wads. He describes these as not your average crappy wads. You can decide for yourself.
Head to our Lost DOOM Sites section for lots more where that came from.

Here's some cool news for classic gaming and Dreamcast fans alike: ROTT has been ported to the venerable, late, lamented DC console!

 WhackEd 1.21
Posted by Jason 'FACE.UK' Sloan at 12:47 AM
Category: General

Exl has let it be known that he is nearly finished on the latest version of WhackEd. The changes are quite numerous so here are just a few:
· Added a (functional) text editor.
· Fixed a bug where the sprites would always get previewed, which could lead to some nasty things.
· Changed some stuff of the sprite previewer, but it's still screwed up. It wont crash anymore though.
· The browse buttons in the options dialog now work (I forgot to add them...)
· Fixed bug: When you were loading the tables from the exe file, you'd always save a complete .deh file, with all entries (could go up to 120Kb!).
· External tables are no longer bulky DehackEd files, they're completely binary now. They now load even faster than from exe files!
· Revamped the way WhackEd handles wad files (which includes even basic PWAD support).
· Fixed version indication. It's 1.20 now instead of 1.02.
· Revamped the way .deh files are saved. Should be a bit faster now.
· Added support to add\remove things.
This is just a portion of the full list which you can find on the Editing Forums.

 Gamers' Hardware Upgrade Guide
Posted by Jason 'FACE.UK' Sloan at 11:41 AM
Category: General

I spotted this over at Ace's Hardware and thought it might be of interest to those people wanting to upgrade in anticipation of DOOM III. As the title suggests, it is an upgrade guide for gamers, with the following upgrades being performed:
· Video Card Upgrade:
We upgrade the Geforce 2 Ti 200 to more trendy video cards, such as the Geforce 4 MX 440, Geforce 4 Ti 4200/4600 and Radeon 9700 Pro (Tyan Tachyon G9700). We also check with a Geforce 3 Ti 200 and Radeon 8500, as both videoards featured an excellent price / performance ratio and have been very popular.
· CPU Upgrade:
We swap our old Thunderbird for a brand new Thoroughbred Athlon XP.
· Motherboard Upgrade:
We simply change the motherboard for one with the fastest Athlon chipset: the nForce 2.
· CPU + Motherboard Upgrade
Everything: CPU, motherboard and video card.
They test this with many games, but I think the one you will find most helpful is the UT2003 test, here.

 Team TNT Update Shock
Posted by Jason 'FACE.UK' Sloan at 12:10 PM
Category: General

After nearly two years of inactivity, the TeamTNT page has had a slight redesign and an update. They even go as far to say that they might even update regularly between now and the release of Daedalus. Anyway, it says that Daedalus could be released pretty quickly, once the ZDoom 2.0 engine settles down, and that a couple of new features in build 39 caught their eye and should make the finale in Daedalus interesting. The music is being worked on, and a few levels are being tweaked that did not balance out with the rest. Read the rest of the update at TeamTNT.

 jDoom Help For Ike
Posted by Jason 'FACE.UK' Sloan at 11:52 AM
Category: General

Ike has informed us that Kill's E3M3 is coming along very nicely and it should be finished within the next 10 days. Team Kill also has a new project link, and Ike is in need of some help, which is listed as follows.
- Someone who can do some stuff with jDoom DEDs (not too complicated).
- Someone who would like to assemble a texture wad from a few different ones for me (I have the original wads).
- Some people to make some maps, specifically for jDoom.
So, if you can help with that, then head over to Team Kill and do your bit.

AMD have announced the release of the Athlon XP 3000+. Now, you may wonder why we are posting about this here at NewDoom.com. So, we will be posting news on processors, graphics cards, sound cards, and speakers with that all-important 5.1 capability. Anyway, the new Athlon contains 54.3 million transistors, compared to P4 Northwood's 55 million transistors. The Level 2 cache is now 512 KB.  Carmack Updates Again
Posted by Jason 'FACE.UK' Sloan at 6:53 PM
Category: id Software

John Carmack has updated his .plan again. It's not really about Doom although there is one mention in there. Here it is:
The machinima music video that Fountainhead Entertainment (my wife's company)produced with Quake based tools is available for viewing and voting.

I thought they did an excellent job of catering to the strengths of themedium, and not attempting to make a game engine compete (poorly) as a general purpose renderer. In watching the video, I did beat myself up abit over the visible popping artifacts on the environment mapping, which are a direct result of the normal vector quantization in the md3 format. While it isn't the same issue (normals are full floating point already in Doom), it was the final factor that pushed me to do the per-pixel environment mapping for the new cards in the current engine.

The neat thing about the machinima aspect of the video is that they also have a little game you can play with the same media assets used to create the video. Not sure when it will be made available publicly.
It's called 'In The Waiting Line' and you can take a look at it HERE.

Chris-Nygaard Hansen is the latest interviewee here at Newdoom.com in which he talks about Mini's, Reviews and his own creations. Here is a snip:
What is it that keeps making you come back to Doom?

Well it's like a cigarette, or a cop of coffee in my case. It's just plain addictive! I really don't know what to say here... it puzzles me. Maybe it's the fact that editing is so time consuming; a level in my case spans several weeks or months. Time flies, you know.

There has been some minor fixes for people using the Hi Res textures pack. This is what was written by Mr Chris:
This changes the startan switch texture, renames the BIGDOOR2-4 textures and make FLOOR0_2 look like the original (edited FLOOR0_1 and did color tint, saved as FLOOR0_2). Enjoy!
The zip file weighs in at 2.7 MB and is for use with the Doomsday engine. If you want it, you can get it from here.

Some Lost Doom Sites for you. Not many around now that are lost but plenty that have not been updated for a while. Anyway here is the latest batch.
· Styx Quake & Doom Maps
Here is a rather eyecatching page that seems to have been abandoned about 18 months ago. Wads a plenty here.

· Daeron's Doom Page
Basically this is just a download page with a few links and a couple of Doom music downloads

· Mike Reeds Doom II Page
Mike Reed was the authour of Hoover Dam. Which is a popular wad and I have seen it mentioned on the forums here at Newdoom. It also made it onto the cover CD of PCGamer way back in 1995. There is more besides so check it out.
Hope you enjoy them and also check out our Lost Doom Sites section for previous sites. Although I am sure that a few are now no longer with us.

The Doomers Recess has its latest review, which is of Mr. Aro's Brotherhood of Ruin. Here is a snippet:
The gameplay is pretty straight forward with a tendency to be more than good. 'Brotherhood of Ruin' tells you with big letter words that you are playing the creation of a skilled and extremely talented guy. One of Finland's finest, that is for sure!

Judge Death has let us know that he has been working on a conversion for DOOM called Sniper Doom. That's not all, though, as version 2.0 has been released, and contains 3 specially made levels for snipers. The game is a stand-alone port based on CSDoom, and currently has all the featutres of CSDoom, including a snipering scope and one-hit kills. There is a place to download this, but not much of a webpage, and you can get it here.

King Doom announces the release of KDX 4.2 Final RC1. It comes in four different releases which range from 253 KB to 48 MB. Here is a quote from the King himself:
I think the most interesting feature in this version is the 'searchfile cache'. This baby can index all your WAD's and DEH's file references for hyper-fast access.
If I play some Doom online and launch the game from IDE through KDX, it only takes a few miliseconds to get the right WAD out of ca. 6800 installed on my HD.
That's a lot of wads. Find all of the above at the King Doom Experience.
