 FreeDM 0.4 Is Born
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:47 PM
Category: General

Rellik let us know the other day in a email (which got lost in my email spam folder) that version 0.4 of FreeDM was released. What is this FreeDM you ask? Here is the skinny on the project:
FreeDM is a FreeDOOM sub project that is aiming to create a high quality Iwad to replace the doom2.wad file from the original id Software game. This Iwad includes high quality maps designed specifically and only for DeathMatch. Single play and Co-op play is not supported unless you are playing a game against DeathMatch bots.
So there you have the low down on what the project is about. You should get over to FreeDM and download that DM jobby.

 ZOOW Alien Dimension
Posted by Jason 'FACE.UK' Sloan at 7:24 PM
Category: General

ZOOW Alien Dimension has updated and here is a snip:
One more weapon to be animated, then they're all animated. Blaster rifle's animations needs to be fixed. There are some holes in the model. I think they appeared to the model because of the md2 conversion. I will fix this problem to the 2.04 version. 2.03 version will be released quite soon.
Jow also goes onto say that the maps may not be released because they are not really connected to each other, however there will be a test arena and maybe another demo map. This will coincide with the update of the highres texture packets.

 Merry Christmas Everybody!
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:43 PM

The clock here just rolled over from the 24th to the 25th and it's now officially Christmas! The staff here at Newdoom would like to wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas. May all you crazy Doomers and anybody else who wanders past here and reads this.... may you all find peace, happiness and good health during these holidays. Hopefully Santa will drop off a few hellish presents for each and every one of you wild Doomers as he passes through tonight. You might want to keep a boomstick under your bed, in case any of those Imp Elves come looking for a midnight snack and if you go outside make sure to look both ways before crossing the street because you never know when you'll get run over by a reindeer. Ahhh so you can't have an news update without a few links IMHO. *looks around for some news links* Ummmmm I think GoldEyes's dog ate the page of links I had, so thats too bad. Have a great Christmas! I'm outta here! *jumps out the newdoom office window and rides off on Planky's transdimensional snowmobile laden with gifts*

Dr Sleep Resurrects His Doom Apothecary
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 6:15 PM
Category: General

Dr Sleep sent me word via email that he's resurrected his website. Dr Sleeps Doom Apothecary is looking pretty spiffy and will look even better once he gets more content added, including info about editing, source ports and his level creations. Dr Sleep worked for id software and did E4M7 for Ultimate Doom, 5 levels for The Master Levels For Doom II and went on to map for Unreal and Daikatana. Dr Sleep has a new screenshot on his Doom Apothecary site for a Doom level called Waters of Lethe which he hopes to release within the week. This is pretty cool news and I can't wait to play it. Anybody interested in playing or replaying Dr Sleep's old Doom maps can check out the reviews and get the downloads for Crossing Acheron and Dantes Gate courtesy of Doom Underground.

     Flashback Demo Reviewed
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:40 PM
    Category: General

GG Inc has a new review up of the Flashback Demo which can be viewed from this review page. Here is a snip of the review:
Though the architecture is largely flawless vintage Doom, more modern design creeps through when it helps to enhance the atmosphere of the level and give a better sense of place. Simple machinery lines the outside of the refinery, and Hell Keep is now a red brick castle. While the detail and lighting is simple by modern standards, it works perfectly in the context of the WAD.
If that's not enough then GG Inc has the rest of the review.

He says a lot more about the map in question and you'll just have to wander over to the Doom Wad Station for the review and download.

Searcher, who some of you know as Gene Bird, posted in our Editing Forum about a new single player map release for DOOM 2 called Blind Alley X: Forlorn. Here is a snip of what Searcher says about his new map:
Under normal play I do not consider it hard to play in UV. Difficulty of play is comparable to Doom 2 on UV, so no one should have all that much trouble with it after a few runs. Skill levels were added just in case. So, if it is just to easy, boost it up to fast or respawn, but most people won't need that.
So, if you're looking to check it out, get on the Editing Forum and download this new DOOM 2 wad from Searcher.

Doom3.com just went beyond a simple splash screen to adding some cool content. There are some screenshots and the DOOM 3 trailer, which most of us Doomers have already seen, plus some cool looking new desktop wallpaper images. You can also pre-order the game from the site if you so desire. Check it all out on Doom3.com!

     Project Crimson Beta-3 Released

Disciple-X sends word that Beta-3 of Project Crimson has been released:
There is one new level with some new music now on Map05 as well as some redone textures. Why did I release a 3rd Beta so soon you ask? This particular Beta will be the last one for a while. This will allow me to actually play Zdaemon for a change. I'll still be accepting feedback and working on the project at a more moderated level. Now the for the main reason.... This Beta WAD file will be showing of Zdaemon/Online doom at CompUSA(Store 617)-Jacksonville Florida in the Gaming Department. Next to computers demostrating this will be a small setup for customers to buy the jewel case version of Doom2 with a link to www.zdaemon.org on it.... I'm sure we all get the picture =)

The new beta-3 WAD of Crimson may be downloaded right now... but there is no server up for the new beta yet. It should only take a day or so to have a server up and running. Beta-2 is still up on GetSomewhere.net, but can only be retrieved using the Zdaemon Launcher and not at my site.
More info and the download can be found at, you guessed it, the Project Crimson site.
