 Carmack On Doom
Posted by Jason 'FACE.UK' Sloan at 6:00 PM
Category: General

John Carmack has replied to a question over at the Slashdot forums on the new Doom. It is to do with the graphics cards needed to run what he calls 'The Next Product' and conformation on Linux.
We are still supporting linux.
The only downside of the next product is that initially it will probably only work at full feature level with the Nvidia OpenGL driver, but after the first test gets out (still a very long time in the future), I will jump back in to the driver development to try and bring the other open source drivers up to par.

Vavoom has updated with the release of v1.666 BETA 1. Here is what Janis has to say:
In this version you already have: wider look range, tilted death view, skyboxes, zooming. It also has no problems with slopes, but they require physics sou they will only be available in version 1.7. It also allows some lighting effects. Since this version Vavoom needs "GL-Friendly Nodes" created with glbsp and PVS (Potentially Visible Set) data created with glvis at least in fast mode.
You know what to do. Get Vavoom

 JDoom's New Features
Posted by Jason 'FACE.UK' Sloan at 6:00 PM
Category: General

We had an Email today from Jaakko Keränen who of course blessed us with JDoom. He wrote to us about a new patch for JDoom.
NEW FEATURES
- Driver configuration dialog for the Direct3D renderer.
- OpenGL renderer buffers vertices (used to cause errors).

This is a small patch that will hopefully do two things: make it much
easier to use the Direct3D renderer and get rid of some of the problems
people are having with some video cards and OpenGL.
So there you have it. Well you will have if you go to JDoom.

     DoomarenA II News!
Posted by William 'Phoebus' Mull at 6:00 PM
    Category: General

Be sure to head to the DoomarenA site, as face's got a new design up to commemorate the release of DoomarenA II! What's new for DoomarenA II? Here's what face has to say:
It still tries to give a 3D feel to a 2d engine, the levels are smaller and flow better. There are enough places to dodge behind or run to in times of danger, but not so many that you will lose your target forever. New textures and flats have been included and it will support 8 players. I hope you enjoy it and the new site design.
There you have it, so head to the site and make that download, you won't regret it :)

Randy Heit posted to the notgod forums that he'll be releasing ZDoom v1.23 soon, so he's releasing a new beta (which you can download right here, along with the below mentioned new ACC and example wad w/ skyboxes from our Files Section):
    http://www.public.iastate.edu/~rheit/123beta8.zip
This version does not use PTC for graphics, and yes, I know that the screen melts currently look nasty. To turn off the bullet holes, set cl_maxdecals to 0.

Here's some basic documents describing some of the new editing features, since I want people to start trying them out.

Sector specials and some new ACS commands: http://www.public.iastate.edu/~rheit/notes.txt If you want to use the new ACS commands, you'll also need a new ACC: http://www.public.iastate.edu/~rheit/acc115.zip
New cameras: http://www.public.iastate.edu/~rheit/cameras.txt These notes were culled from the source code with some small comments added, but hopefully they're not too hard to figure out.

    Slopes: http://www.public.iastate.edu/~rheit/slopes.txt
    Sky boxes: http://www.public.iastate.edu/~rheit/skyboxes.txt
There's also an example wad with some skyboxes: http://www.public.iastate.edu/~rheit/thebox.zip

Over at Slashdot John Carmack has answered a question put forward about Linux. He mentions this about the new Doom.
It is going to be quite some time before DOOM ships, so we can't say anything definitive at this point. I will probably do the initial development work for DOOM on linux, but I'm not interested in tracking every change that goes on in the linux world. The initial work will probably be with the Nvidia driver, which already has all the features I need, then I will work with the Open Source mesa drivers to bring them up to par.

I had played Wolfenstein 3D, of course, so as you can imagine I jumped right on the Doom shareware as soon as it was available! The first time I played Doom, I was living in Athens, GA, and it was right before my buddy Evan and I went to a party. At that party, I still felt like I was running around in the level. And all I wanted to do was get back home so I could play some more!
So, where were YOU the first time you played Doom? Let us know!

     American McGee Interview
Posted by Jason 'FACE.UK' Sloan at 6:00 PM
    Category: General

Well Rounded Entertainment has posted an interview with American McGee. In it he mentions that he has seen the engine at work.
"What blows me away is the lighting architecture," he says. "The light is real. It's like watching a movie with the sound off, then - whoa! - turning on Dolby 5-channel."
McGee, who's close friends with John Carmack, has seen the engine at work and calls it a "quantum leap" in gaming engines. He also gose onto say that he has two projects planned. The bigger project, he says, will probably start as a PC title, though. And to fuel it, he wants to use the Doom 3 engine id Software is crafting right now. Thanks to Necromancer for this.

There is a linedef with no sector tag this is for a transporter. It is up to your discretion where you want that to transport to. Note also, of course that the contest deadline has been changed to reflect the Last Modified date/time, so it is now 12/12/00 11:10am Eastern. Again, sorry for the inconvenience!

     Quick Contest Addendum
Posted by William 'Phoebus' Mull at 6:00 PM
    Category: General

We just got a couple of questions from someone planning out the design of their wad, which I thought I'd pass along with the answers for the benefit of all who may be wondering the same. I'll update with more of these as I have them:
I'm sure you know this, but zDoom and a few other engines can support a .deh
(dehacked) file that is built in to the wad. Can an entry have a dehacked file like this?

    Good question; yes it can.

Also, I forgot to ask you this in the other email, is it allright if we use hexen format (which is required to use ZDoom's ACS (scripting))?
    Yes :)

     More Wad-in-a-Week Details
Posted by William 'Phoebus' Mull at 6:00 PM
    Category: General

We've refined Point #1 of our Wad-in-a-Week rules, in response to a question sent in, and have added Legacy, EDGE, and JDoom to our list of source ports that your wad submission(s) may be compatible with. Our original list already (and still does) included Boom/ZDoom. Hope that makes sense (words are great things, aren't they?). The time for the contest is drawing very near, so if you still have any questions after reading back over the rules, please send them in to wadinaweek@newdoom.com while there's still time.

     csDoom v0.7 Released!
Posted by William 'Phoebus' Mull at 6:00 PM
    Category: General

After an extended leave of absence, csDoom v0.7 has finally been released! Here's the list of what's new:

    • A new csDoom launcher. It saves the servers list to the windows registry and you can delete csdl.ini. You know where this file is... I think, you deleted it many times ;-)
    • Cooperative play. Cooperative isn't finished yet and very strange things happen sometimes but it works! I'll be glad to see some ultimate doom co-op server...
    • Added fragstats support. Go to fragstats homepage and read what it is. (Read about fraglog and fragstats commands in the csdoom readme.)
    • Many bugs had been fixed and csDoom became more stable. I tested it a lot and it didn't crash.
    • Switches work properly now.
    • And many other bugs had been fixed...
Head to the csDoom site for more info. You can download csDoom v0.7 right here from our Files Section!
