Knee Deep In ZDoom Coming Soon
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 2:41 PM
Category: DOOM Wads

While I was sleeping (or something) Nmn slapped an email into my email jobby. It seems that the Knee Deep in Zdoom project is approaching it's release and is planned to be finished in March. Here is what Nmn had to say about it all:
Right now we have entered the final phases of celaning up any potential bugs (so our product remains perfectly flawless) and adjusting gameplay for the game not be a slaughter-but the greatest fight for Your live. A lot of maps are done, including the 10th Super Secret map (e1m10) which is very special in it's way. In works there is also an intro that uses Zdoom's newest feature-the titlemap-to show everything that happened on Phobos and Deimos before the lone marine, the hero, You entered the lost outpost overrun by demonic hordes.
Check out Knee Deep In ZDoom that is on Wads In Progress.

 The Doom Boardgame Site
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 2:04 PM
Category: Other DOOM Engine Games

While I was looking for other news I noticed that there's a section to the Fantasy Flight Games site for Doom The BoardGame. If you never heard of this beast then here is some of the low-down on this Doomed jobby:
In Doom: The Boardgame, demonic invaders have broken through from another dimension into the Union Aerospace Corporation’s Mars base. Marines have been deployed to the base to protect UAC personnel and destroy the invaders. Up to three players will take the roles of heavily armed and highly trained marines, while one player will control the legion of demonic invaders. In the game, the marine players explore the claustrophobic rooms and corridors of the Mars base, attacking monsters, picking up new weapons and equipment, and working together to complete specific mission objectives.
It'll be interesting to see some reviews on this Doom The BoardGame dealie.

Source Engine vs Doom 3 Engine
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 1:22 PM
Category: DOOM 3

Not much seems to be going on today but then again I was away until now and will be gone again soon. So anyways I noticed one of those comparison thinghys that looks at both Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 and compares the aspects of both game's engine cores.
The main stereotype that the Doom 3 Engine suffers from, is that it can only render small, cramped inside corridors. This in fact is completely untrue, because the engine is quite capable of rendering big, detailed outside worlds. You will see the outside capabilities of the engine in Quake 4 and it will dramatically change people's perception on what the Doom 3 Engine can do. The Doom 3 engine is more suitable for inside environments though, because of its BSP (Binary Space Partitioning) system for optimizing the graphics engine. The Doom 3 Engine also supports larger textures, which in the future will allow the textures to look even better. The Source Engine is pretty much the opposite. It is more suited for outdoor environments and its inside environments don't look nearly as lifelike or detailed as Doom 3's. Both of these things are debatable and it is pretty much a toss-up for this category.
So check on that Source vs Doom 3 engine article that's on DevMaster if your interested.

Resurrection Of Evil Interview With Tim Willits
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 4:08 PM
Category: DOOM 3

computerandvideogames.com interviewed Tim Willits about the upcoming Resurrection Of Evil expansion to id Software's Doom 3. Here is a quote from the chit chat:
Tim Willits: We've put in a lot of new demons, but we don't want to talk about too many of them at the moment. My favourites are a huge new creature called the Bruiser who's packing two chainguns for arms and is even bigger than a Hellknight, and a smaller imp-like creature called the Vulgar who's quick and deadly.
By the way, for some reason he reveals the end boss. So if you don't want to know who or what that is exactly, go hide under the couch and cut the internet or something. Then again you can probably guess if you played Doom 3 already. Otherwise hit this page.

Doom Internet Engine In The Works
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 3:53 PM
Category: DOOM Sourceports

Maniac sent in the news that he and some other guys are working on what they're calling DIE (Doom-Internet-Engine) and he says it's not really what you'd call a source port and will be designed from scratch. Now the team is looking for help in the programming department so if you know any C# or C++ (C is acceptable), then maybe you can help them out.
Allow me to go over the history of DIE so far, it all started with AZDOS (Advanced-ZDoom-Operating-System) until we decided to make it from scratch. It will include many things that ports do not. It will include things like MD2/MD3/MD5 models and will have dynamic lights to be put in maps and much more.
If you have any suggestions or questions you can hop onto the DIE forums and do just that.

The Knee Deep In ZDoom! Community Project
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 1:17 PM
Category: DOOM Wads

Nmn dropped me a message about a project called Knee-Deep in Zdoom. Instead of disecting his email I'll just let him explain the whole shebang in a quote:
Imagine how Episode 1 would look if ID had the power of Zdoom back at 1992. Imagine if they could put almost endless details into their maps, ACS scripting, custom monsters, slopes, 3d floors, skyboxes, deep liquids, and all other nifty Zdoom effects. This dream is coming true. The project Knee-Deep in Zdoom has been in development since August 2004 and time is coming that we are preparing for relasement of the project. All maps from Episode 1 has been rebuilt based on the original levels. We-the best mappers of the Zdoom community-are doing our best. The levels have been expanded with new areas (including a special appearance of an old unreleased Alien Vendetta map!!). Huge amounts of architetectural eye candies and new gameplay features have been brought to them making them totally new levels. The fear spawned by the atmosphere greatly differs from the original episode 1-we don't want to recreate it's atmosphere, but improve it. A new Intermission system has been created that replaces the old aerial view on the Phobos Installation-marvel all the glory of the UAC base in full 3d, at day and night!! New textures, new challenging monsters, amazing episode 1 soundtrack, 2 new weapons that will help You survive the massacre. Relive the Nightmare, Relive Phobos.
Now you know why I didn't want to try and reword all that. Haha, so now what you should do is go to Wads In Progress and check out the Knee-Deep in ZDoom Community Project

Next is a Total conversion called Pinochestein (note the menus are in Spanish) that can be found in the TC area. Finally, but not least, Sematary says that Ray Schultz (aka Shitbag) released a new map called Yesterday. He says that the architecture is stunning and has to be seen to be believed.  Anouther Doom 3 Expansion Preview
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 12:54 PM
Category: DOOM 3

IGN has thier version of a Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil preview posted online and they talk to Tim Willits and Matt Hooper about it all.
But when it comes to environments, id is trying to up the ante a little bit. "Based on feedback and general comments about DOOM 3 people liked a lot of the later environments and ancient civilization areas that were a lot different from the base stuff, so we're starting the player off in these areas right away," explains Matt Hooper. "The first areas that you traverse through are the remnants of a really ornate ancient civilization and are part of the dig sites where the UAC was uncovering things."
So go read that three page article on the Doom 3 expansion pack right here.

 Resurrection Of Evil Preview
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 8:38 PM
Category: DOOM 3

The dudes over at gamespy.com posted up a preview for Resurrection Of Evil, the upcoming Doom 3 mission pack that is being developed by Nerve Software along with id Software. They speak with id software about the expansion and here is a quote from some of the chit chat:
The expansion picks up about two years after the end of DOOM 3. The UAC has covered up everything that happened on Mars (blaming it on a reactor malfunction), cancelled all operations and cleared out. However, their satellites are still orbiting the planet, and when a strange beacon signal is picked up, the decision is made to put together a team and send them down to investigate. And that's where the fun begins.
So check out the complete article. I think that Vulgar looks pretty damned cool...

 Teamkill Lives!
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 3:37 PM
Category: DOOM Wads

I got an email from Andrew of Teamkill and after a year of silence they have some news to share with everyone. After many moons (eight to nine years) the project is still being worked on and it's almost complete. He says that there's only two normal maps and one secret (joke) map left to do. Due to the olde page no longer being available and the new page not ready theres no new screenshots yet. Furthermore TeamKill has new members, a new webpage, and a new project. The new project, Scourge: Lunar Eclipse will be a 10 level, Doom 2, Jdoom wad.
Right now, a few maps are already completed and more are being worked on. The project will use some of jDoom's cooler features, such as light mapping, particle effects, enhanced music, fog effects, enhanced textures, and XG specials, as well as some new monsters, while still striving to feel Doom-like. The projected release date is in early Februrary.
For more info on the whole deal, hit the Teamkill site.

 John Carmack Updates Blog
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:18 PM
Category: id Software

Both Aliotroph? and Phoebus pointed out to me that John Carmack updated his blog space on Armadillo Aerospace with some onfo about the delayed release of the Quake III source, some bits about Doom 3, id software's next game and what he calls random graphic thoughts.
I get a pretty steady trickle of emails from people hoping for .plan file updates. There were two main factors involved in my not doing updates for a long time – a good chunk of my time and interest was sucked into Armadillo Aerospace, and the fact that the work I had been doing at Id for the last half of Doom 3 development was basically pretty damn boring.
For the complete read go right here!
