 Dr Sleep's DOOM Apothecary Arrives!
Posted by William 'Phoebus' Mull at 6:32 PM
Category: Hosted Site | Personal Projects

We're very proud to announce that John 'Dr Sleep' Anderson has revived, revamped and re-energized his esteemed DOOM Apothecary, right here in our neighborhood of hosted sites! As some of you may know, Dr Sleep is a bona fide legend in the DOOM community, who has lead quite a life in the gaming industry. He received much acclaim for his DOOM levels in the early days, like Dante's Gate and Crossing Acheron. This lead to working alongside the id Software staff on The Ultimate DOOM and The Master Levels for DOOM II. After that, John worked with Epic in the early stages of Unreal development. Then John Romero at Ion Storm gave him the call to work on the infamous, but then-promising Daikatana. Enough of the history lesson already, you can read the whole story, along with all the other great content on Dr Sleep's DOOM Apothecary!

 SeHackEd v0.4 Released
Posted by William 'Phoebus' Mull at 3:34 PM
Category: Other DOOM Engine Games

Gokuma sends word that v0.4 of SeHackEd, which is a version of DeHackEd that works with Strife, has been released. Here's a bit of explanation from the sehacked.txt:
SeHackEd is capable of heavily restructuring the way Strife works. It allows you to modify a number of data tables from the Strife exe file. Give the Bishop 5000 hit points, make shop keepers portable, have teleport beacons call in templars to fight for you, make bosses appear in multiplayer, or make weapons of mass destruction such as reusuable rat buddy bombs! Give your struggling rebel a grappling hook, change the cheats to something easier to remember, or edit the Frame data to create new looking items or extra-fast shooting weapons. Save your changes in patch files to distribute to your friends, or to the world. Create new types of deathmatches, with energy "mines" and super-fast wimpy rockets. Wad developers can modify enemy types to distribute with their levels... great possibilities!
Head to the SeHackEd site, as well as Gokuma's home site for more info on modifying Strife.

 Doomsday Engine 1.8 Nearing Release
Posted by Alex 'Slide' Mitchell at 5:47 PM
Category: Hosted Site | Ports/Mods

Slightly delayed, but exciting nonetheless is Skyjake's update on the new simulated radiosity (a.k.a. FakeRadio) project for the Doomsday Engine. Now confirmed as being part of the long awaited 1.8 branch, Doomsday will make its first major version update after a year of rapid fire point releases to the 1.7 Engine (14 in all). This new version will include several major new fundamental changes in addition to the new FakeRadio renderer; such as an all new networking engine that should more forgiving to those still with narrowband Internet access and a new Linux binary, meaning that the best looking/sounding DOOM sourceport out there is finally available on a non-Windows platform. Head over to Doomsday HQ now for more details.

 Crimson beta-4 Is Released
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:23 PM
Category: DOOM Wads

Disciple-X sent in the news that Crimson beta-4 is out. This is a Deathmatch wad that is Skull Tag compatible. Here is a part of what he has to say about the wad:
There are no new levels in this version, just the same levels with dressed up textures and new ways to obtain the BFG and Plasma gun in maps 1,2, and 4. I mainly focused on dressing up the current 5 levels for the display at CompUSA. They now seem to be a little more eye catching which should help draw attention to the game itself.
Get the download for Crimson beta-4 right here. According to Disciple-X If the provided link gives you trouble, simply obtain the wad through the Zdaemon server browser.

 Doomsday High Res Texture Utility
Posted by Alex 'Slide' Mitchell at 8:50 AM
Category: DOOM Editing

In another major advance for Doomsday Hexagon has managed to adapt the HQ2X & HQ3x filters (2D resampling filters by Maxim Stepin normally used by console emulators) into a utility that takes a normal WAD file and extracts graphic information, applies the filters and presents them in a form that the Doomsday Engine can use with jDoom, jHeretic and jHexen. Currently the utility is at the beta stage; only working on sprites but Hexagon already has some great screenshots on his Doom ReTeXturing utility project page. With this project means that Doomsday users can finally use decent high resolution textures without downloading large (~200mb) texture packs, here is the forum page.

New Doom 3 Article And Screenshots
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 7:35 PM
Category: DOOM 3

ComputerGaming.com posted up this Doom 3 Preview Article and here is a small example:
The art in Doom 3 looks like an H.R. Geiger nightmare. Lead artist Kenneth Scott starts by showing the cast of prezombified characters, each with different types of heads and effects. He uses a blending technique to shift a woman from the normal state to a sallow zombie. "Early shots we've sent out only have a couple zombies in them. People are probably thinking they all look alike, but they don't," says Scott. There are lots of gruesome ways to die, and they'll all be on display. Various chunks from a body could be missing, an exposed skull here, no stomach there. Then there are some personal favorites, like the security guards who still wear cracked goggles after their eyeballs have burst.
If that isn't enough to slake your need for Doom 3 stuff, then feast your eyes on the latest Screenshots.

It's a good thing to be able to upload shots of your hard work and get comments on what your doing, plus be able to see what others are working on as well. Make sure to read the Rules before using this service provided by Boris.
