Slow News And ReX Got The Mapping Blues
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:05 PM
Category: DOOM

It seems that ReX posted on Doom Nexus.
I put in a little bit of work on From The Ashes of Fear, but I'm afraid that I lack the creativity and enthusiasm necessary to create a high-quality map.
Oh well, not much is going on. It's a lazy Friday or something.

 Parallax Extreme v1.2
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 8:33 PM
Category: DOOM

Once more Dafama2K7 releases a Doom 3, grpahical changing mod and this time it's Parallax Extreme which has been updated to (v1.2).
This mod tweakes the Doom3's graphics engine by applying parallax mapping to all textures; It incorporates an improved central shader and all other textures benefit from the Simulated Parallax Mapping design. The result is a significant improvement over standard bump mapping.
You can grab that mod off of Doom 3 Files, but only if you want to.

 In The Darkness Something Stirs...
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 8:50 PM
Category: DOOM

So I was looking at various web encrusted, half-dead Doom sites and other online anomalies when I noticed that there seems to be a stirring in the crypt that is the official Team TNT site. So anyways, Ty Halderman posted that he fixed various broken links and we can expect some Return from Oblivion info sometime within a week. So there you go and here I go to play some Guild Wars....

HeXen: Edge Of Chaos Gets New Help
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 8:00 PM
Category: DOOM

The HeXen: Edge Of Chaos TC has gained some new team members recently in the form of a story writer and some level designers.
We have found and selected a writer in the form of our new member Spookt. But that's not all that's changed. We also welcome THREE new mappers in the form of Ruckus, Zwiffle and Gman. All in all we're switching gears as we implement story and maps and try to intwine the two as much as possible.
Also note, if you're interested in joining the team, then you should give them a shout.

The Battle For Mars Is Over
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:17 PM
Category: DOOM

Doom Hacker updated with the news that Doom: The Battle For Mars has been cancelled.
The reason is there's no actuall progress in the project for a long time because I don't have time for that anymore and I lost my motivation from this project... You never know, maybe in the future I will get back working on it. I'm releasing the source code for you all doomers and programmers...
So that's the end of that.

 Zombies In Your Doom
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:50 PM
Category: DOOM

So which one of these two site is the newest: Dawn Of The Dead or Dawn Of The Dead? The first has a news post of May 15 and no year and the other says July 26 of 200? Geez guys did the Zombies eat your site? So I went to their Moddb page and apparently they updated a few days ago. Check out their screenshots at least. I'm tired.

You Won't Find This One In Your Cereal
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:07 PM
Category: DOOM

Not much seems to be going on. Even the Rage stuff has died down.... so what do we have today? How about a Chex Quest TC for Doom 3 that is called Chex Trek: Beyond the Quest (Beta v0.52).
The Farceware Team as released their newest version of their popular mod, this is an updated version of that's compatible with patch 1.3.1. There have been a few bugs ironed out, but nothing major.
Well I gotta go now and walk one of two greyhounds..... n' stuff.

 Shade Your Doom 3
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:46 PM
Category: DOOM

Go hit Doom 3 Files and check out this Shaders Pack for Doom3 (also Resurrection of Evil) by Dafama2K7.
This pack is for both Doom 3 Base and it's popular expansion, Resurrection of Evil! Shaders Pack is essentially a modified shader for Doom 3, that will give you high quality dynamic highlights and it enhaces the 3D look of the surfaces.
That is all on Doom 3 Files.

 Some Sort Of Lazer Map
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 1:59 PM
Category: DOOM

Laser (v1) is a deathmatch map for Doom 3 that was put together by sirjj.
What does sirjj do for a distraction while he's working long hours on a quality SinglePlayer map? He builds a quickie Mutiplayer map, of coarse! That's not to say that this map isn't a quality map, it is made pretty good, maby not with dazzeling detail or titilating textures, but with the amount of ducking and weaving you'll be doing, stopping to check out the area won't be an option.
You can grab that map off of Doom 3 Files.

 32 In 24 Part Three
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:22 PM
Category: DOOM

Tango updated The Spiffcave (looks like he finally found a nice theme) with some info about a third 32in24 megawad speed dealie. I guess I missed the 2nd one somewhere. Umm anyhow:
A third 32in24 was completed on Sunday, in which I participated. I wasn’t home most of the day/was busy (playing Megaman X), but I was able to make a decent map near the end of the day, entitled Orangutang Conspiracy.
If you want to read more, hit The Spiffcave and read the 3rd item.

The Dark Mod Rope Arrow Update
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 2:19 PM
Category: DOOM

I decided to check up on The Dark Mod and they updated today! Apparently they have a lot of work done to rope arrows and physics.
Ropes will now transfer the player's weight realistically to whatever they're attached to. If you shoot a rope arrow into a small crate and hop on the rope, you'll pull the crate over the edge instead (this wouldn't happen with standard D3 physics). Improvements have also been made to the physics of carried objects (eg, you can't swing a big crate around as quickly as you can a small book).
There's also three new videos demonstrating various uses of rope arrows.

Kevin Cloud And Steve Nix Interview
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 3:27 PM
Category: id Software

Gamasutra posted up a interview with Kevin Cloud and Steve Nix of id Software, where they chat about id tech 5 stuff and the future of the PC.
KC: Yeah, well... Doom sort of captured people's attention because it really brought something new to the industry, this idea. It wasn't the first first person game, but definitely the level of immersiveness was there. That sort of fast-action first person shooter, the immediate interaction between you and the world was there. That captured people's attention. Our goal with any game is to try to recapture that. My hope and expectation is [Rage] is going to do that. We've got a lot of cool ideas with it.
There's six pages of info, so go read that or something.

 Doom Builder 2 Revealed
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:33 AM
Category: DOOM

CodeImp has revealed that he is indeed working on Doom Builder 2.
Currently a work in progress that I recently started. This is a remake of Doom Builder using newer technologies. Programmed in C# and uses DirectX for both 2D and 3D rendering modes.
Thanks to Mr_Rocket for pointing this info out.

 Tim And Todd On Rage
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 5:57 PM
Category: Rage

If you put a hit on Shack News you can read an interview they have with id's Tim Willits and Todd Hollenshead on Rage.
Tim Willits: Then I've always loved that Road Warrior stuff, because the lines between good and evil, right and wrong get skewed as people try to rebuild society. It gives us a fun setting. It's funny, there are a number of games coming out in the near future with nuclear war, or Earth is striked by a comet. We were joking at work, "Man, Earth gets beat up in the next few years." [laughs] But it does give freedom to be a little more creative.
Yeah so check out id's Tim Willits and Todd Hollenshead on Rage.

 Team Up With The TinMan
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 8:17 PM
Category: DOOM

Dafama2K7 released TinMan NG (v2.5), which is a mod for Doom 3 that adds teammates to your singleplayer game.
How many of you prefer to play singleplayer maps, but miss the backup that teamates offer in those hairy battles? What if you could have that kind of help in a singleplayer mod? Well, with TinMan NG you can! This mod originally created by The Gamer, has been given a facelift by Dafama2k7 and released for your Doom III gaming enjoyment.
You can grab that off of Doom 3 Files.

 Steve Nix Interview
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 5:24 PM
Category: id Software

Over on EuroGamer there's an interview with id Software's Steve Nix about what is going on at id Software.
Graphically we think we'll be bleeding edge, because we think we're going to have the best-looking games possible with id Tech 5, but what he means by not really cutting edge is we're not going to be just hammering all of the parts of your computer like we would have previously been, just because the way that the MegaTexture approach works is so unique in that it really doesn't hammer your video memory the way a previous id title would have done.
Have a look at the two pages of that id Software's Steve Nix jobby.

 The Outer Darkness Review
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 1:43 PM
Category: DOOM

Ismaele went and updated his Outpost Of Doom II with a review of The Outer Darkness.
Designed to replace E4M7, this level follows the typical hellish theme of E4, with lots of stone, marble, metal and wood. Architecture is simple, being it designed several years ago, but quite detailed: in fact, you can notice some astonishing details and nice ideas along the level.
Read the full review right here and the screenshots can be found right here.

 Put On Your Hazard Suits!
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:59 AM
Category: DOOM

If you put a hit on karthik82 (the site that is) you'll notice that he released The Hazard Variation which is designed for The Ultimate Doom.
This is one map I am very proud of. I think it turned out well in both the looks as well as gameplay departments, and has a tight, fast pace. It's very small, so the focus here was to re-use areas and create some interesting fights. Nothing much more to say, I hope you have fun playing the level. You can play it in any port of your choice, but a limit-removing engine is required.
Downgrab The Hazard Variation!

Marty Stratton On New Quake Games
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:50 AM
Category: id Software

Over on Game Riot they posted up a Q&A session with Marty Stratton of id Software where they chat mostly about new Quake games.
Yes, we'd like to make the next Quake Arena game the most balanced game that we've ever created. The Quake 4 patches we did are just the beginning of what we can show to how much we want to truly make the best competitive game ever created.
Not much is said about the Doom series or Rage for that matter... Here is the link to the article.

 Lethe Screenshots
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:07 AM
Category: DOOM

Hobomaster22 updated his site with the info that he is working on a map for Plutonia that he calls Lethe.
This map was actually started two years ago and I've been picking up on it when I had time. I think its coming along nicely and I've just about got the full layout done and now I can really work on the gameplay.
Check out some screenshots of the map right here. You can also check out his map on WIP.

Hollenshead On Licensing id Tech 5
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 8:51 AM
Category: id Software

Lets return to Shack News and read what Todd Hollenshead has to say about Licensing id Tech 5.
In an attempt to get with the times, id plans to distance itself from its reputation for rudimentary development tools, which have traditionally been a byproduct of Carmack's time schedule.
Have a look at the rest of that Licensing id Tech 5 article.

 Kevin Cloud Talks Cool Stuff
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 1:15 PM
Category: id Software

The Escapist put up an article called Still Creating Cool Stuff where Kevin Cloud of id Software talks about.... well a lot of stuff in 4 pages. Here is a snip:
"As a company, we've been really supportive of trying to foster an online community, a mod-making community. As far as bringing them into the industry, I think that's not something unique to id. I think a lot of people are recognizing the talents of the developers out in the community. For one thing, they're working in real-world stuff. They're making models for games, making art and levels for games, so they have to work within the constraints of the game, which is difficult for people to get used to if they haven't worked in the industry before.

 Tim Willits Rage Interview
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 8:03 PM
Category: Rage

Game Informer put up a Tim Willits Interview concerning Rage and what it is.
The big focus is fun. We need to make sure we make the first-person stuff fun. We need to make sure we get the driving, vehicular combat and the racing fun. We’re not trying to do Gran Turismo. It’s more arcadey. In my design, I will always err on the side of fun, action, arcadey against realism, because those pure racing simulators are awesome but it’s not something that I like to play, because I don’t have the patience for it. I want to drive around, blow sh** up, run stuff over and have a good time. That’s what I want to do with Rage.
Be sure to read the two pages of that Tim Willits Interview.

 Rising Blood Released
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 7:26 PM
Category: DOOM

Time to hit Wads In Progress because Chris Hansen released Rising Blood, which is a Doom 2, singleplayer level made for ZDoom.
This level is a small side project I'm running at the moment. It's a remake of one of my old levels this time using the same awesome texture pack which I used for Flay The Obscene 4. The latter of which never got released. It uses a skybox for extra coolness.
Go grab some Rising Blood.

 Infernal Hellknight (v1.1) Released
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:40 AM
Category: DOOM

Gallonigher released his Infernal Hellknight (v1.1) skin for Doom 3 that fixes some issues with the last version.
The work put into this skin is evident, as the flesh has been twisted and scarred...and it looks pretty good, (check out the Hellknight when it is in the shadows) A look more befitting something that is a spawn of hell! The developer has also stated that, although this download will work no matter what the quality settings are on your system, for the full effect, it should be set to 'high.'
Check that out over on Doom 3 Files.

Date of Ultimate Torture In September
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:31 AM
Category: DOOM

Over on Realm 667 Tormentor 667 has posted a possible release date for his Ultimate Torment and Torture project.
I almost can't wait for that day to happen (and not because only it's my 23rd birthday.
So if you know his birthday, then you know the possible release date. Otherwise all I can say, it's in a month or so. Also if you're interested he updated with some new screenshots.

id Software Is In A RAGE
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 7:06 AM
Category: Rage

Gamespot revealed that id Software's new game is called Rage and they take a first look at it during QuakeCon 2007.
DALLAS, Texas--You know all about Doom and Quake. Now get ready for Rage. Famed programmer John Carmack announced id Software's newest game at QuakeCon 2007 in Dallas today, and it represents a departure of sorts from the company's traditional first-person shooters. Rage will have shooting action, but it will also feature racing and driving gameplay, along with adventure in a post-apocalyptic world that seems inspired by the classic action movie The Road Warrior.
Check out that first look article, there's more info on there. Thanks to +Acyclitor+ who pointed out the link on our forums.

 The Outer Darkness Comes Out!
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 7:38 PM
Category: DOOM

I posted a few days ago that Karthik mentioned on karthik82 that The Ninth Gate team decided to release their maps as individuals and apparently Varun has gone ahead and released The Outer Darkness.
Most of this level was made during 2001-03 with DoomCAD (yes!), so the architecture is pretty simple, though detailed. The exit area was made with Doom Builder. No new graphics, except a titlepic. The level music is from Duke Nukem 3D, the other tracks were composed by Damian Lee (originally for The Ninth Gate). It plays on E4M1, and you need a limit-removing port like ZDoom to play it.
So go check out The Outer Darkness and downgrab that map.

 Infernal Hellknight (v1.0)
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 5:08 PM
Category: DOOM

Gallonigher released his Infernal Hellknight (v1.0) skin for Doom 3.
The work put into this skin is evident, as the flesh has been twisted and scarred...and it looks pretty good, (check out the Hellknight when it is in the shadows wink ) although, for maximum effect, it would have been nice to have a side-by-side screenshot of the stock Hellknight and the revamped one.
Have a look at that on Doom 3 Files.
