Lock Down And Grab Your Gun
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:06 AM
Category: DOOM

A visit to Doom 3 Files reveals that Castle released a multiplayer map for Doom 3 that has the title, Lock Down.
This map comes from a time in Doom's past when the thought of the day was the darker the better, so this map may not be to every bodies liking, but for a few of you hardcore DOOMers, this will be like a trip down memory lane.
The author has released maps for Quake 4 and dug this one out of retirement. Check out some Lock Down.

Quake Wars On Console And Kevin Cloud Interview
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 8:46 AM
Category: Quake

If you take a trip over to Tom's Games you can read two articles related to id Software. The first concerns the fact that Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is coming out on May 27th for XBox 360 and PlayStation 3. Secondly Kevin Cloud talks about the whole Consoles vs. PCs shebang. Here is a quote from the Kevin Cloud article:
Cloud said that Id had planned on doing an Xbox 360 version of Quake Wars early on in the PC game's development, but plans for the PS3 version of the game came later. Going forward, Cloud said the developer will aim for simultaneous development and release plans for multi-platform games, including Id's current project called Rage, which is a first-person shooter for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, as well as the Mac. "We're excited about the opportunities on the consoles," Cloud told us at GDC. "I'm a PC gamer, but the console can still be a fun and exciting gaming experience. And it's an opportunity to bring a great game to a lot of other people."
Tom's Games got the goods.

 CTF Points System Input
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:56 PM
Category: DOOM

The latest update on the Odamex site concerns the CTF points system, which they're looking to refine.
This system is a good start, but it needs to be refined. Personally, I'd like to see points and frags/betrayals/suicides linked. Manc would like to see a penalty for flag drops (so that people don't boost score by suiciding+flag grabs). We would like to hear what you think!
So if you're interested in that sort of thing and have an opinion, then maybe go say something.

 Check Out The Gatehouse
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 5:54 AM
Category: DOOM

evilartist uploaded Gatehouse onto Map Factory. The level is designed for Doom 3, singleplayer and here is a snip from the readme:
“Every century, it materializes under the full moon” says the inhabitants of a secluded European village. They say that a dreadful king of demons inhabits this mystical castle and that his curse is what allows this fortress to return every 100 years.
Take a peak at that Gatehouse map. The available screenshots do look nice.

 id Software Announces QuakeCon 2008
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 2:44 PM
Category: id Software

id Software has announced QuakeCon 2008.
MESQUITE, Texas - April 22, 2008 - As temperatures begin to rise it's time to start planning the ultimate summer vacation to THE must-attend gaming event of the year - QuakeCon 2008. That's right! The world's greatest gaming festival and party will take place July 31 - August 3, 2008 in Dallas, TX at the Hilton Anatole Hotel. As always, this event is FREE to all attendees thanks to the incredible support of the QuakeCon volunteer staff, id Software, and the event sponsors and exhibitors.

QuakeCon will once again host North America's largest BYOC (Bring-Your-Own-Computer) LAN party, as well as an expanded exhibits area with nearly 60 companies demonstrating their latest products. Of course, it wouldn't be QuakeCon without highly-competitive tournaments for serious cash and bragging rights, parties, contests, entertainment and announcements.
Hit the QuakeCon site for more info. I'm hoping that the event will reveal a little more about Rage....

 Doom 3 Concept Art Vid
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 8:48 PM
Category: DOOM

Nothing much is going one that I can see. So I was digging around and spotted a Doom 3 Concept Art video over on YouTube that shows some images from Doom 3 xbox collectors edition. Obviously the pictures are pretty damned small, but it's interesting just the same and there's a few bits that never made the final game.

I was just on Shack News and they mentioned that the word from id Software is that id tech 5 is ready to be license soon with strong cross platform performance.
Because of the universal texturing everything in the world can be uniquely textured, and it's a look you just can't get in any other game. Once you see it you go 'shit, I have not seen that anywhere else.' We're really proud of what we've put together there.

 Maginot Line Bunker
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 5:54 PM
Category: DOOM

Maginot Line Bunker is a singleplayer level for Doom 3 that was designed by Cayle George.
Maginot Line Bunker is a resurrection of the World War 2 era Maginot Line bunkers created by the Axis forces; With the exception of the Great Wall of China, the Maginot Line was the greatest system of permanent fortification ever built, and probably the last. In spite of this, it has remained relatively unknown as far as its technical construction and history are concerned. What is known about it is its unenviable reputation for being the greatest White Elephant of all times.
Grab some Maginot Line Bunker.

 Omicron 1 Anonymous 0
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 4:56 PM
Category: DOOM

I was just on Doom 3 Files and they have a map uploaded on there that's called Omicron 1 which is a singleplayer map for Doom 3 that is designed by....anonymous?.
Omicron I is an aging facility on the outskirts of the UAC Mars complex. Used primarily for advanced weapons research, its remote location makes it ideal for heavy ordinance and experimental weapons testing. It is accessible from Mars City by a freight loader track that ferries supplies back and forth.
Ok I did a look around and found the map on PlanetDoom and the author listed on there is Gabriel Sheets.

There's A Snag In Them There Portals
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 7:44 PM
Category: DOOM

I don't know what a linked portal is and how it pertains to Doom level design, but Som updated his Pad with the news that he's hit a bit of a design snag with coding these portals.
The current clipping code which handles objects standing half-way through portals is critically flawed and needs a complete rewrite. Also, the tracer system is apparently broken and also needs a bit of an overhaul. I'm very unhappy with these recent developments, as the problems stem from having to work within the doom clipping system which was originally designed for 2.5d clipping.
Yeah, so that's all I know.
