Now would be a good time to hit /id Games and grab some Congestion 384 which is a set of 20 maps by Cycloid for Doom 2 and from what the users say over there it's worth a downgrab. Not bad at all for a quick blast, the maps are well made and sometimes it is necessary to think first before jumping into a firefight in order to survive. This WAD is not for everyone, but those that like small, fast and simple maps will enjoy this. 3/5 Go grab some Congestion 384 .

So check that out on Shack News.

I just spotted on bit-tech.net that the Quake Live Open Beta Starts Today (article was posted on the 23rd so it says over there 'tomorrow' but guess what that means TODAY).Ostensibly, Quake Live is a streamlined version of Quake 3: Arena that runs in a browser and is available for free. id Software is hoping that the entire game can be financed by advertising around the game, thus negating a need for microtransactions or subscription fees. Yeah so check out the fact that the Quake Live Open Beta Starts Today!

Hypertension Revealed

Over on Mod db I noticed some Hypertension, which is a mod for Doom 2.A completely new way of playing Blood, it will follow two characters with two different storylines and two different ways of playing. The game will feature all of EDGE's features, especially 3d models and dynamic lighting. Unlike Transfusion, Hypertension will blend the original sprites, new graphics, and the 3d models (as well as a significantly darker world) to bring a new visual splatterfest to the game. So investigate that... or not, that's up to you. Me I'm off to get some rest. heh.

Over on the Apple site they put up a designer profile on John Carmack.“I grew up during the emergence of both personal computers and videogames,” Carmack recalls. “I was fascinated by both of them, so I naturally fell into writing games on computers. By the time I was 20, I was focused on the joy of engineering and trying to do new things that people hadn’t seen before.” Yeah, so read more about John Carmack.

I see that ReX has updated the Doom Nexus with more info on Paranoid. According to the intrepid Doomer, the project is getting help from Nigel 'Enjay' Rowand and DB 'Deathbringer' Thanatos and there's more info on the site pertaining to the whole project.I have made big progress on Map05, and have begun work on a secret level (yes, you heard me right) which fits into slot Map06. I also have a place-holder for Map07, which I'm thinking of making a terrain-based map. So. There you have it. At least 7 maps (6 of them in one hub), fantastic models, marvellous new enemies and weapons. What more could one ask for? Well, perhaps a glass of Pouilly Fuisse, vintage 1971. So hit Doom Nexus and see what is going down. By the way they (team that is) call themselves The Persecution Complex. Sounds kinda snazzy... Have a great day people.

New Doom 4 Info Revealed
 Posted
by
Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch
at 6:45 AM |
Category: DOOM |
Over on Slashdot they revealed some new info about Doom 4, including production shots! This all leads to a interview on GGL.GGL Wire has an interview with Hawkins and a selection of production shots. '[Filmmaker Mark Bristol] was very specific on the civilians having a certain personality and the military characters having a separate one as well. The body language of the civilians is less, well, "trained." They carry their guns in a looser fashion and are a little sloppier when they run, a little more freestyle. The military characters are sharp as razors, with very swift moves, exact hand positioning and can turn on a dime." Read more right here. At this time, I can't get the link on Slashdot to load... so I haven't seen these shots yet. heh. Thanks Aliotroph?! [edit] I'm back hours later and the link is dead. I dug around and found this Doom 4: Brad Hawkins Motion Capture Interview on Voodoo Extreme... there's no still shots though.

Zorx77 sent me an email which revealed that over on Doom3World, whitewolf posted he is in production of a Doom 3 project called Reclamation.Reclamation is a non linear, open world total conversion for Doom 3 with a brand new story. Taking its cue from doom 3's immersive, interactive levels, Reclamation sets you loose in a giant, eerie, depopulated underground military research facility that is a world away from mars city and sees you battling biological-warfare induced hallucinations as you struggle to reclaim anything of value that is left, and the earth struggles to reclaim the installation built deep under her surface. That's all! I'm off to... do stuff.

Putting Fires Out With Doom

Now for something different... considering the Doom news seems to be lacking... so here is an article that says that First Person Shooter Games Helpful In Fire Safety Training. As per the research, commercial games like Doom 3 and Half Life 2 can be utilized in building up such virtual worlds where people learn the procedures of escaping fire with the help of the underlying software codes. As a part of the research, a 3D model of the real world and three fire evacuation scenarios complete with smoke and fire were developed with the help of these games. Durham researchers find this to be a speedier and more cost-effective way than using the conventional virtual reality tool kits or writing code from the scratch. Especially, the games from the first-person-shooter genre have been found to be immense help. Games from this genre offer first person perspective and “greatest capability and resources for modification". So there you go... and I'm off!

Phobos: DevBlog Entry Four

Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch

Category: DOOM |
shaviro updated the Phobos site with the fourth DevBlog entry where he talks about making models for Doom 3: Phobos! We, early on, knew that we wanted to create new monsters and characters. For this we needed new models that had the same quality, style and general look as Doom 3. This was very important for us because we are making an expansion. Few things would be worse than having the player realize that certain elements of the world just didn't fit in. The illusion would break. So go forth and hit Phobos to see what is going on with Team Future.

Paranoid Screenshots

I just noticed that ReX appeared on Doom Nexus with a batch of Paranoid screenshots for us all to gawk at.Since my last batch of screenies (September 2008) I've created wonders that can only be imagined. At least I imagine that they can only be imagined. Still, I've built a 4-storey prison facility (see screenshot 10 above), created a vast Test Chamber with at least one operating crane (see shots 5-7 above), a cafeteria complete with overturned tables (shot 8), and a series of objectives designed to get you past a huge hole in the floor. I'm almost done with Map02, which means that all I have remaining in terms of mapping is Map05. (Notwithstanding what I said last month about possibly creating some stand-alone maps.) So hit Doom Nexus if you want to view the eye candy.

jeramie sent me a PM that he released a wad that is called Doomed Super Mario which replaces ALL textures, sprites, graphics, enemies, weapons and sounds. If anyone is interested in making levels for this, let me know. Also, it would be a great deal of help, and add to the legitimate Mario atmosphere if I could send someone the midis to be converted to .mus The wad is designed for Doom and is recommended to be run using the Edge source port. If you want to help or give feedback, check out the thread on the forum.
