 Some DoomSlayer News
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 1:38 PM
Category: DOOM

Stubbsy updated his DooMSlayer site with some info on his Boss Battle Contest level that he says is finished.
The theme is a boss map, and I strongly urge any mappers reading this to make a map for it! The map I've made (it's already finished, but cannot be released until the closing deadline) will fit nicely into Go4it as MAP12 as a miniboss before Stalwart Terror.
Also he says that he's been working on a map called Gridlock for Go4it and also a level called The Occult.

 The Dark Mod Update
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:29 AM
Category: DOOM

I just took a visit to The Dark Mod site to see what's new. The latest update on the site talks about new members, models, weather effects (check out the screenshot section for a snowy winter alley screenie) and the fact that the team had some discussions on the future of the mod:
We have had some serious discussions about our progress this summer, and have had to take a difficult look at what we want to achieve with the mod. The gist of the discussion is that we can either try to include -all- the cool ideas we've had thus far and be working on the mod in 2010 (not even counting the campaign!), or we can cut back on our expectations and release something sooner.
Put a hit on The Dark Mod site and read the full update.

 Tormentor Is Into Mapping TNT3
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:52 PM
Category: DOOM

It's been awhile since I visted Realm 667 to see what the heck Tormentor667 is up to. It seems he's in the editing mood and has continued work on The Ultimate Torment & Torture MAP01 of TNT3.
But progress goes well, although the first map of "Damnation's Keep" is a real performance problem with DB due to it's size. Screenshots for this and as well for Netherworld soon in the projects area.
Check out Realm 667.

 Level Of The Day #4
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 3:14 PM

 Temples Review
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:03 PM
Category: DOOM

Over on the Doom Wad Station you can find a review by Black Sentinel for a Doom 2 wad (2 maps) that's called Temples.
The design was classic and traditional all of the way. Everything was well thought out to make a realistic temple setting with spiral stairs, sniper-filled parapets and undeground blood-filled dungeons.
Check out that Temples wad.

 Doom 3 Mod Teams Invitation
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 8:35 PM
Category: DOOM

A couple days ago an invitation was sent out to all Doom 3 teams to come together in a kind of alliance where members can share modding info and help one anouther out on a dedicated forum.
We would like to offer a place, in which exclusively active Doom³ modders will meet and discuss among themselves, give tips and maybe lend a hand here and there. Each one brings in his strengths and in the end, everyone will benfit from it. We want to point out, that each modification will persist uniquely and independently with all their individual traits and innovative ideas. But we think it’s important that all the active modifications on Doom³ support and assist each other in such a way.
So if you're a member of a Doom 3 mod and want to join up, go forth and hit this link where you can drop a short line and let them know what mod you're working on. Found the news on Doom 3 Files.

 New Update On Doom Nexus
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 8:56 PM
Category: DOOM

ReX updated Doom Nexus with the info that he's nearing completion of the eighth map in the Wicked series, Damnation Awaits the Wicked, which has a hellish theme.
The map is rather linear in that there is generally only a single path that the player can take (which is a departure from my typical map). However, it is non-linear to the extent that the player re-visits areas that were visible earlier in the level. As it's set in the "Hell" episode of DooM2 the map will feature the tougher baddies.
Also ReX has put together a small tutorial article that's called: What Makes A Map Look Good. Check out that stuff over on Doom Nexus.

 Doomer Passes Away (R.I.P. Toke)
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 8:56 PM
Category: General

It's a sad time in the Doom Community as the news about Toke and his passing has reached us here at Newdoom. On August 20th, 23-year-old Dylan McIntosh was killed in a car crash, which you can read about right here. tourettes posted on our forums in this thread about Toke and the tribute wad that the ZDaemon members are putting together in memory of Dylan. The staff here at Newdoom sends forth condolences to Dylan's friends and family.

Modify Issue 25: The Long and Short of DOOM 3
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:39 AM
Category: DOOM

Andy Mahood posted up anouther Modify article over on Gamespy and this time the spotlight is on 3 different Doom 3, singleplayer levels, Hellzone Z1, Crypt 2 and Once Upon A Time.
With that in mind, we're going to examine three diverse single-player DOOM 3 maps this week -- a puny 20KB release, a medium-sized 5.5MB map and a healthy 35-megger. Not too surprisingly, gameplay depth varies dramatically as you move up the scale.
So go ahead and read the full Modify - Issue 25: The Long and Short of DOOM 3 article.

 ZDaemon Clan List
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 8:34 PM
Category: DOOM

I was just kicking around when I fell into the ZDaemon main page. I'm pretty damned sure they recently added that big list of ZDaemon clans (including links to thier homepages) near the bottom of the main page. This may not be big news or anything but I thought it was pretty interesting and maybe somebody will discover an olde clan or one they want to join. Personally I just want a coffee and maybe some peace and quiet.

 Rotoscope Your Doom 3 Experience
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 7:05 AM
Category: DOOM

Here is something totally different and will probably only be interesting to certain people (but what the hell do I know). I haven't tried it myself but Hellborg released a Rotoscope Cartoon Shader (1.0) that adds cartoon like shading for vanilla Doom3 v1.3. There's sixteen screenshots to check out to help decide if you like the look or not.

Level Of The Day: Under Neith
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 6:12 PM
Category: DOOM

The Megawad was updated today with a new section that is called Level Of The Day. Actually this replaces the olde and defunct Best Of Doom section that was taken down ages ago. Anyhow the Level Of The Day is Sarge Baldy's Under Neith. If you haven't played it, now would be a good time.

 Lynch Update
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:08 PM
Category: DOOM

If you put a hit on the Lynch site you'll notice the mod is seeking talent in the area scripting/coders and anybody interested should check out the Jobs page. Also there's a couple new 'test build' screenshots and a Design section to check out. Also in the Design section you can read about The Lynch Cam Effect. So check that stuff out while I go sneak off somewheres..

A Marine Could Die In Only Two Sectors
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 12:00 AM
Category: DOOM

If you happen to like playing some ZDoom or ZDaemon deathmatch games, then this 2sector megawad is something you might want to check out.
Sometimes the best things are simple. Sometimes they are complicated. Whatever they are, it is sometimes important to return to basics. Thus, this. A 37-map megawad, where no map uses more than two sectors.
Downgrab that megawad off of /idgames.

 The Great Boss Battle Contest!
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:16 AM
Category: General

There's a new editing contest happening on our forums with Fatal announcing The Great Boss Battle Contest!
You can be very creative with the map. It doesn't have to necessarily be a cyberdemon or spider mastermind fight. It can be a fight against a horde of monsters, or even some hideous puzzle thingy (the wad cyberdreams comes to mind). The player may not even have to fire a shot. So creativity is definatly a bonus. A one on one fight with a cyberdemon in an arena most likely isn't enough to win the contest.
Read The Great Boss Battle Contest! thread for more info if you happen to be interested.

An Interview With Tormentor Part Deux
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:30 PM
Category: General

Doom Wad Station posted up the 2nd part of an interview with Tormentor (Daniel Gimmer). Apparently he is releasing a new project in the near future. Here is some of what he had to say about it:
All the original Torment & Torture Episodes, "Opening Abyss",
"Armory of Pain", "Damnation's Keep" and "Lost Episode : Fury of Fire" are included. But don't think that this is just a junction of all the wads with nothing new to expect! All the original episodes have been completely revamped. You will see more details, new architecture, new traps and surprises and many other things that will jolly you along. So nobody has to worry if he already knows the originals inside out, I guarantee! ;)
Check out that interview with Tormentor.

 Todd Hollenshead Interview
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 6:07 PM
Category: id Software

id Software's Todd Hollenshead Talks New IP over on Next Genertaion which really doesn't reveal anything and they skirt the subject to talk about other stuff. Still interesting to read what Todd has to say.
There’s not really any secrecy about it, it’s just that we don’t want to go out and say things that end up not being accurate later. And right now, the technology is in the R&D phase, so we don’t want to go out and say things that will later to not be accurate, and have people say, ‘well I thought you said this,’ and ‘why didn’t that happen—’
That's all on Next Genertaion.

 Lynch Mod Revealed!
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 7:40 PM
Category: DOOM

So I was messing around the internet and found a Doom 3, singleplayer mod site for a project called Lynch that I've not heard of before. Here is the lowdown:
Lynch is a first person, survival horror mod built for ID software's Doom 3 engine. Inspired greatly by games such as Manhunt, Theif, Condemned: Criminal origins and films like Irreversible and Man bites dog, the mod throws the player into a desperate situation in which they must fight and/or think to survive. Violence is not the only answer here, nor is it entirely necassary, but you will be frequently forced into asking questions regarding morality, and the primal instinct for survival.
By the way they're recruiting in the areas of scripting and coders if you're interested. Check out Lynch!

 The Maze v2
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:17 PM
Category: DOOM

LethalVirus released a Doom 3, singleplayer level that's called The Maze (v2) over on Doom 3 Files.
The point of this was to scare the hell out of you and to provide you with a challenge. I wanted you to use your flashlight. The lighting is very bad (either dark colours, or not a lot) to give you a scary feel, along with some zombies, demons, and creepy sounds that play through-out the level. It has A LOT of enemies to fight, most of the demons teleport in, and most of the zombies hide around corners.
Check that out on Doom 3 Files.

Carmack QuakeCon Keynotes On id's Next Game
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:39 AM
Category: id Software

PlanetQuake4 posted up some Carmack keynotes from QuakeCon. Here are the tidbits about id Software's next game which remains unanounced.
  • id Software will be focusing on gameplay over graphics in their next unannounced title.
  • id's next title will be a 3D action title that will be their biggest diversion since Wolfenstein.
  • A more advanced version of the megatexture technology will be used in id's next title which includes lots of outdoor areas.
  • While they will be developing their next game simultaneously on the XBOX 360, their primary development platform is still the PC.
  • Their current project will include multi-processor support in both the console and PC platforms.
  • id is branching out in a different direction for their new title which they expect to be a blockbuster.
  • id's next game has "a lot of people in it".
Hit PlanetQuake4 if you want to read the rest of the keynotes.

 GZDoom Wads Site Goes Live
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:12 AM
Category: DOOM

Well it was mentioned in the last news item that DWS is hosting GZW and Jive sent me a message to officially announce the launch of his new GZDoom Wads site (aka GZW). For now there's 14 wads to check out on the site, most of which are classical ones. So check that stuff out while Jive digs up more GZW stuff.

New Sites On Doom Wad Station

The Doom Wad Station is now on a dedicated server with unlimited bandwidth so we can expect to see some expansion of the site in the near future. Bob Larkin says he added three hosted sites which include: Alysium Productions (Doom and Doom2 editing tutorials), GZDoom Wads (devoted to Gzdoom wads of course) and Shitbag's Craptacular Doom Place (Shitbag's personal stuffs).

 Origin Facility
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 5:25 PM
Category: DOOM

Origin Facility is a multiplayer level for Doom 3 that is designed by Ice Weasel.
This map is based on Boxy's Origin map for The Hidden Source, and serves as all my inspiration for the level, so a big thanks to him. I made this because I figured it would be a nice present to the Hidden team for such a cracking mod on their behalf, a big thank you from me, if you will. That said, I hope you enjoy the map!
Doom 3 Files got the goods.
