 Chaingun Replica Revealed
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 7:12 AM
Category: DOOM

Now for something completely different for a change. Back in October sonicblaster59 posted on our forums in this thread where he revealed that he was designing a replica of the chaingun from Doom. For some unexplainable reason I missed this post where he showed the finished weapon. Worth taking a look at methinks...

 The Alpha Mod 1.0
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:11 PM
Category: DOOM

Here is one of those mods that changes how things look and stuff in Doom 3 ---> Alpha Mod 1.0 that was made by Dafama2K7.
It is the claim of Dafama2K7 that the sounds and textures contained in this mod are better then what is found in the stock version of Doom 3, and that the playability is better...but don't rely on the spoken word, find out for yourself. Keep in mind that, as with many initial releases, this mod is not perfect, however, any issues that have been identified, or reported will be sorted and fixed in following versions.
That is all on Doom 3 Files.

 Spiffy Speedmaps Hit Vegas
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:43 PM
Category: DOOM

Tango who dwells in The Spiffcave posted that work is slow on the Vegas project and they're (Tango and DomRem) spicing up the wad with snazzy speedmaps.
Due to our major laziness and lack of excitement, we’re now shaping the wad with spiffed up speedmaps. This also means that the wad will consist of more maps; speedmaps themselves are created rather quickly, and I (maybe DomRem too; it depends on how fat he’s being at said time) can usually come up with a finished product in a week or less, giving me a ridiculously short amount of time to lose interest in a map.
Hit The Spiffcave and see what the deal is.

 Pillars Revealed
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 4:10 PM
Category: DOOM

Pillars is a Doom 3, singleplayer mod where you'll play as a service tech who ends up fighting the government...
The plot is set in a world in which the gap between rich and poor has grown so wide that two completely different societies have evolved. Interaction between these two societies has completely ceased. The upper class has built gigantic structures - the Pillars - high above ground level and are ruled by a government that denies their citizens the right to any knowledge about the people left behind on the ground level.
I found the mod and the site due to a visit to thier page on Mod DB.

It is going to be a small-to-medium sized level for Doom II, replacing MAP01. I've set up a page for it, with a teaser poster I made, and the story I've written for the map. Screenshots and more details on the level would be showing up on that page very soon.
Be sure to hit the teaser page for the Stygian Neblua poster and the story.

Update Info On The Ultimate Torment and Torture
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 6:03 AM
Category: DOOM

Tormentor667 posted some new info over on Realm 667 concerning The Ultimate Torment and Torture project.
I had finally a chance and some time to work on Episode 3 from The Ultimate Torment and Torture and I really made some great progress. The first part of MAP01 is completed and the second part is about 60% done. The cavern area was the hardest part of it and I had to change many things to make it look as good as the rest but hey, it works, take a look at the screenshot meant as a prove.
There's more info over there so take a trip to Realm 667 and see what the hell is going on.

 Mind-Killer (v1.5e)
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:25 PM
Category: DOOM

Mind-Killer (v1.5e) is a Doom 3, singleplayer mod that is supposed to make the gaming experience more interesting and realistic.
This mod continues my single player modding projects than include Weapon Mod for Soldier of Fortune 2 and Beyond the Call of Duty for Call of Duty. It doesn't invent the wheel again, it just makes it little better and 'realistic' as possible, but also keeps the game in a playable condition. In other words the game is fun to play and it will give you a challenge.
Go explore Mind-Killer (v1.5e) over on Doom 3 Files.

You can read more right here and also explore links to seperate lectures (Todd Hollenshead of id and Michael Capps of Epic) that came out of the Game Developers Conference.

Odamex Wants You To Play With Yourself
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 5:13 PM
Category: DOOM

According to the Odamex site, the port now has rudamentary single player support.
This should help a lot for map and engine testing as it eliminates the "netcode" factor. So, if you've been wanting to help out but are afraid of "netcode", now it's even easier!
By the way this only works with Doom 2 at the moment.

 Karthik Speeds Into Mapping
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 8:08 AM
Category: DOOM

I sauntered over to Karthik's site (--> karthik82 <--) and noticed that he updated with the info that he took part in the speed mapping event that Sarge Baldy spearheaded on the weekend.
The theme for this session was "Create a map inspired by one of your favorite maps. You don't need to recreate the map; just try to give yours a similar theme and feel." I picked Doom E3M5: Unholy Cathedral as my inspiration, and made a tiny map in 100 minutes.
According to Karthik you can grab the compiled map pack off of Sarge's Speedmapping page right here. Grab the file called: sbspd019.zip and Karthik's level is map01 and there's also maps by Torn, DomRem, Dr Zin and Zap610.

 Steve Nix Interview
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 7:12 PM
Category: id Software

Over on GameDaily Biz they posted up an interview with Steve Nix, Director of Business Development at id Software. They chat about the possibility of some id brands ending up on the Wii, Emmy Awards, Vista, DX10, John Caramack. mobile gaming and lots of other stuff.
The main thing is that in independent development, or any large studio development, it comes down to the leadership of the company. You've got to have the right core leadership; there's been a real emphasis on process in the industry over the last few years, and everyone thinks you can come up with this great process and push the 'make game' button... but the problem is that if you don't have the right leadership team, then all the process in the world isn't going to make a good game.
That interview is three pages long so go read it already. Thanks to Phoebus for pointing this article out.
