 Spork On Simplicity
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:15 PM
Category: DOOM

If you hit Agent Spork's Doom Realm site there doesn't seem to be much new but drop into the Simplicity page and you'll notice he recently updated with some stuff about the next release of the megawad.
Map23 - Stigmata is officially finished, and is the second map to be completed for the new version. It is one of the four techbase style maps in Episode 3. Currently there are eight normal levels left to be completed, as well as one secret level. Tweaks to Episode 1 have been completed, and tweaks to Episode 2 are well underway. Expect some big changes to those…
That is all on Doom Realm.

 DungeonDoom XP 8.0.1
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 5:28 PM
Category: DOOM

Hellborg released DungeonDOOM XP (8.0.1) for Doom 3.
DungeonDoom is a Doom3 modification for Windows operating systems (Linux version to be released soon). It incorporates most key features of rogue-like games. In particular, levels are largely composed of mazes, which are generated with a pseudo-random number generator. Levels have stairs leading either to higher or lower levels of the dungeon.

Caught In The Crossfire Of News Posts
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:23 PM
Category: DOOM

There doesn't seem to be a hell of a lot going on in the Doom Community as of late. I don't see any Doom 3 mod updates or any map releases anywhere or anything else for that matter.... maybe I'm going blind. I suppose you could always read this Doom 3 Review on GamersInfo which is probably the last known review of the game. Also there's Kaiser's Crossfire on WIP which is released but doesn't have any download but I just dug around and found Crossfire on /idgames. Yay! Some news came out of this rambling afterall. Don't worry tomorrow will be a better day.

 Todd Hollenshead Interview
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:21 PM
Category: id Software

Worthplaying posted up an interview with Todd Hollenshead of id Software on the future of gaming, the Doom movie, thier new intellectual property (which remains unanounced) and other game related stuffs.
TH: The new IP project is the main focus of the development team at id. We have the other projects that we're working on, like Wolf, ET:QW, and our efforts in the mobile phone games, but those are all using other teams as the primary development resource. I'm not sure when we'll begin discussing details of the new IP, but it will be the next game developed entirely by id and it WILL be cool.
Go read the rest of that Interview.

Doom Wad Station Ultimate Doom Contest
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:21 PM
Category: General

Bob Larkin of the Doom Wad Station is holding a Ultimate Doom 3 Collection Contest jobby.
Beginning now, I am opening this contest to any and all comers. The way to enter is by making a donation to Doom Wad Station. What is the prize, you ask? A used (but in excellent condition) copy of Doom3 with all the stuff it orginally came with. A new (not used) copy of Doom3, Resurrection of Evil. A new copy of the Prima Doom3 strategy guide for the PC (pretty much works for the xbox as well). The three figurines that were minted in limited edition for the presale of Doom3. There is one of the original presale boxes and all three of the figurines (Pinky Demon, Baron of Hell and the Mancubus). Also included is a used (and rare) Ultimate Doom trilogy with a second cd containing preview content for Doom3. That means that the winner will have a legal and working copy of every Doom game ever produced as well as the strategy guide and the figurines. As an added bonus, the person who donates the most over the contest period will receive my personal copy (installed once) of Quake IV (unquestionably one of the best games I've ever played).
If you happen to be interested then check out The ULTIMATE Doom3 collection contest.

 FlufMOD (1.0)
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 6:56 PM
Category: DOOM

So I was on Doom 3 Files and here is anouther flashlight mod for Doom 3 that is called FlufMOD (1.0).
A menu interface allows easy manipulation of which weapons have lights and which don't, as well as a interface selected key binding to toggle the light on or off, for the realism factor (some rooms you just don't want a light). I am not sure if the AlertMonster() affect from the flashlight is processed by the gunlights, but I have many more plans for this mod.
That is on Doom 3 Files.

 SkyDancer's Shotgun
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 6:43 PM
Category: DOOM

I noticed on Doom 3 Files that SkyDancer released a flashlight mod for Doom 3.
Why use duct tape when you can just turn on the shotgun’s own flashlight? I basically added a beam and flare to both the view and world md5 mesh for the shotgun so that it looks like the cylinder protruding from the shotgun is a small flash light. This adds a little bit of realism to anyone wanting to use a flashlight with the shotgun and not wanting to drastically alter the shape of the shotgun.
Check out SkyDancer's Shotgun.

New FAQ On Doom Wad Station
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 5:42 PM
Category: General

I received an email from Bob Larkin of the Doom Wad Station with the news that he has put up a new FAQ. Here is the explanation in Bob's own words as to what the new FAQ is all about:
I get ALOT of email from people who are returning to the Doom fold and are shocked that Doom2 or Doom doesn't work properly in Windows XP. Naturally, they are looking for answers. With that in mind, I have created a new faq for n00bs @ this link that talks about the development of ports, the most popular ports (from my perspective) and some of the features that are likely to be found in most of the current crop of ports for Doom and Doom2. I would also like to ask the community to send me any thoughts they have on the subject so I can round the faq out. They can email me directly at this link

 Team Future's Presentation Video
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:00 PM
Category: DOOM

I noticed on Doom 3 Files that they have Team Future's Presentation Video ready for download.
The last four months we have been hard at work, bringing the first episode closer to completion. We are reaching a point where it is not as much a matter of creating geometry, rather one of polishing and tuning. One of our artists, Vladimir, has constructed a presentation video with some of his artwork alongside of several shots from our maps. We have decided to release this video.
That is on Doom 3 Files.

Doom Movie DVD Review On IGN
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:15 PM
Category: Other Stuff

IGN posted up a Doom Movie DVD Review (Unrated Extended Edition).
Despite all outward evidence on the box artwork and promotional materials, Karl Urban, and not The Rock, stars in Doom, playing John Grimm, a laconic and properly bestubbled soldier who harbors painful memories that he cannot forget. When an emergency transmission received from Mars sends his squad back into action, he is forced to confront the past he left behind; reuniting with his estranged sister Samantha (Rosamund Pike), he finds that their tenuous reconciliation may be short-lived when he discovers that the facility where she works has been overrun by mutated creatures.
That is all on IGN.

When Game To Movie Adaptations Go Bad (Blame The Game Writers)
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 6:19 PM
Category: Other Stuff

Next Generation posted an article called Game Devs: Hire More Writers where a panel of movie developers discussed the importance of writers in games. All of this includes the crummy Doom Movie of course...
He also explained the reason for the somewhat unimpressive Doom theatrical release. "We checked every decision with the creators. We tried to balance what they wanted with what the studio wanted. But it got whittled down to a very basic story instead a sophisticated sci-fi story. There comes a point when studios will say its just not worth it."
Sounds like a bunch of slug speak to me. Game devs may need better writers, but how the hell does that make a better movie when they take all the game elements and screw them up?

 Day Of The Acolytes
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 11:33 PM

I was just on Wads In Progress and Kaiser released his Day of the Acolytes level for Svstrife 1.4 and will also run with ZDoom.
You wondered though the wilderness, searching for food until you were spotted by an acolyte. The remains of the Order lurks within a small complex, planning their war with Blackbird and the rebels. Suspected as a spy, you remain in their detention center. A group of acolytes and a officer inter your cell, preparing for your torture. You will not give up without a fight....
Check that stuff out.

 John Carmack Mobile Development Interview
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 2:48 PM
Category: id Software

Mobile Industry posted up a Interview With John Carmack on Mobile Development and here is a rip from the full article.
MobileIndustry.biz: Is this the first of many id-related mobile phone adaptations? Any plans for taking an RPG approach to your other brands like Quake or Wolfenstein?

John Carmack: Probably not more RPGs based on id titles, but there is another mobile genre-swapping idea that we may be pursuing based on Quake 3 Arena. Stay tuned...
That is all on Mobile Industry.

id Software Will Switch To XBox As Primary Development Platform?
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 12:08 AM
Category: id Software

Next Generation reported Right Here that John Carmack said id Software is thinking about making the Xbox 360 thier primary development platform, but not exclusively.
"The Xbox 360 will probably will be id's primary development platform. As it is right now, we would get the game up on the 360. When I would do major hack-and-slash architectural changes it was back on the PC, but it’s looking like the Xbox 360 will be our target. All of our tools are on the PC, and we’re maintaining the game running on the PC, but probably all of our gameplay development and testing will be done on the Xbox 360. It’s a really sweet development system."
This info comes out of an interiew PC Gamer UK had with John Carmack. Also note that the current game id Software is working on hasn't been officially announced.
"For the last year I’ve been working on new rendering technologies. It comes in fits and starts. Our internal project that’ll incorporate it hasn’t been publicly announced. We’re doing simultaneous development on Xbox 360 and PC, and we intend to release on PlayStation 3 simultaneously as well, but it’s not a mature enough platform right now for us to be doing much work on."
So that's the latest info out of id Software.

New Reviews On Doom Wads Station
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 8:54 PM
Category: DOOM

We had a big snowstorm blow in here and I ended up shoveling.... ugh. Ermmmm anyhow I didn't get to check my email till now and Bob Larkin sent me a message which I'm getting to late no thanks to nature and other activities. So Doom Wad Station now has reviews for Evacuation Protocol (Doom 3), Escape (Doom 2 / Legacy), Wasted (Doom 2) and Simple Tricks (Doom 2). Bob Sayeth:
I highly recommend the Doom3 map to anyone who can play it. As for the Doom2 maps, Wasted seems to be the winner today. Escape has some cool Legacy 3d effects and shadowing but gameplay is not really there for the average doomer and Simple Tricks, makes up for what it lacks in design elements with pure fragness! Enjoy the maps!
Check that stuff out!
