 Vavoom v1.22.1
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 8:52 AM
Category: DOOM

Vavoom v1.18 was the last version that I mentioned on here (just checked) and that was awhile ago. The port has since been updated a few times and recently v1.22.1 has seen the light of day.
This is mainly a bug-fixing release. New features in this release are support for JPEG format textures, support for HI_START/HI_END and HIRESTEX script defined high resolution textures, proper support for enhanced music and skybox replacements of normal skies and support for custom episode definitions.
Hit the Vavoom site and get the port down-grabbed.

 Return From Oblivion Getting Closer!
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:39 AM
Category: DOOM

I spotted this morning that ReX posted an update on Doom Nexus yesterday and he reports that his 3 maps for the Return From Oblivion project that is being designed by Team TNT is complete.
Overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles (such as running up against WadAuthor's limits, and my own innate lethargy), I have finally completed a journey that I started almost 3 years ago. It's unbelievable that I have taken so long to complete this small set of 3 maps, but those are the facts. Now it's a matter of making sure the other TeamTNT members finish their stuff off, combining it all into a wad, and releasing it. End of January, maybe? We'll see.
Furthermore ReX posted some new screenshots of the maps... just scroll to the bottom for the new stuff. Well one thing is for sure... this is at least one thing to look forward to in the New Year. <°)))><

New Version Of Don's Challenge TC
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 8:54 AM
Category: DOOM

Due to a visit to WildWeasel's Doom Armory I noticed that WildWeasel mentioned that Cory Whittle released an updated version of his Don's Challenge TC for EDGE on his website.
This is a demo of the "engine" used for the Don's Challenge trilogy. It has all weapons and enemies from DC1, as well as the effects and shared resources from parts 2 and 3. It is playable in any Doom or Doom2 iwad or pwad. It also includes a separate demo level, but it is only a showcase, not part of the finished product.
Here is the linkage to the Edge site.

Aliotroph? sent me a message that links to Slashdot where they posted an article called The Many and Varied Games We Play which includes several links, including this one: John Romero On Videogames As Art.
Basically, you have all these artists creating one giant thing. I don't know why you wouldn't call it art.
So there you go, something different to gawk at for a few secs...

Doom 2: The Series Episode 00 Machinima
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 3:04 PM
Category: General

Rellik_jmd dropped me one of those PM dealies that he put together a mockery of id's second Doom3 trailer.... here is the explanation in his own words:
The hilarious first and only episode of the landmark Doom 2 series! Created entirely inside the Doom Legacy engine, this machinima film may be the last "true" machinima film ever made! Heh. In order to figure out just what was possible with the Doom Legacy engine, I started putting together a mockery of id's second Doom3 trailer (watch it here at Gamers Hell) but it soon took on a life of it's own. It was never meant to be anything more than a test-run but ended up being a complete film about the events that started it all. Anyway, watch enjoy. See for yourself how it all began...
Direct link to the .wmv file is right here.

13 Years of Doom Needs Help
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:53 AM
Category: DOOM

danimetal is putting together a 13 Years of Doom project and is looking for help from the Doom mapping community. Hit this thread on our forums for all the info and such on what he has planned.
To celebrate the 13th birthday of Doom I´ve thought of a little project we could undertake that would result in a Doom2 Map13 (or Doom e1m3)... Our little community tribute to the game.
12 slots are in need of filling. Are you game or just a lurker?

 Into Sandy's City
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 8:08 AM
Category: DOOM

If you put a hit on Wads In Progress you'll notice that Paul Corfiatis released a singleplayer wad for Doom 2 that is called Into Sandy's City.
Into Sandy's City is a 9 episode for Doom2 that is quite average by design. This is by no means a serious attempt. Some of you will like it, and others will hate it.
So there you go. Take a look at Wads In Progress and grab that Into Sandy's City episode.

 Hidden Email, Crouching Remasters
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 12:56 PM
Category: General

I was just cleaning out my email due to my inbox being full of spam, press release info, newsletters, strange requests and one news item that got lost in the pile of 500. So instead of ignoring it and walking away whistling, I'll post here that I messed up and Tolwyn sent me a email a couple months ago (sorry Tolwyn :p) that he released the Memento Mori II Disc 1 Remasters
This is basically a remaster of the MP3.com material released in the early 1930s. Wait. 1990s. Whatever. ;)
Check that out right here.

Category: DOOM

Well Doom's birthday has come and gone (Dec 10th) and it wasn't till the 11th that I realised that Doom had turned 13 and that was due to Zack posting a thread about it on our forums. Meanwhile and more recently DooMad made it known in our NDCP section which can be seen right here that our Newdoom community made megawad received a Caco Award. So if you haven't noticed yet, Scuba Steve has put together the 13th Annual Cacowards. Congrats to everybody who won this year. So check that out, there's some wads that you may have overlooked this year that require playing.

Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:36 AM
Category: DOOM

I was just eating some snacks when I hit The Spiffcave and the lights went out, there was a tremor and a large BOOM noise. Not sure what happened, but apparently I was wrong somehow and DomRem and Tango go to Vegas won't be out in the next week and Tango was actually talking about a wad called Gyrotechnics.

Just noticed a small update on The Afterglow where Derek posted that he added Nick Baker's updated version of Recoloured Doom which can be found on the textures page. Derek also mentions that he's still working on his singleplayer project, which will be his final Doom related release. I guess we'll have to wait to see when that gets finished.

 Doom Wad Station's 50th and 51st Reviews
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 3:05 PM
Category: DOOM

Bob Larkin sent me an email that reveals that Doom Wad Station has had it's 50th review for the year in the form of a Doom 2 map called Ectopia.
Well, it's been a good year for Doom2 mapping. Sure, there's been alot of crap to wade through (as usual) but we have also seen some really nice work and some in between. Amongst it all, we at Doom Wad Station have managed to review 50+ Doom2 maps that were good enough to bother with. That's on top of the Doom3 reviews, Quake 4 reviews, Castle Wolfenstein reviews and everything else that we've been working on this year. It's been a good year for Doom and for id Software communities. :-)
Also there's a review by Jive for a Doom level that is called Ada.

Apparently the deadline for the NDCP II megawad has been pushed forward to January 1st now that the team has decided to give itself some xtra time as you can read right here on our forums. So if you happen to be on the NDCP mapping team, you might want to get 'stuck in' and get that map done. Good luck and lets hope PumpkinSmasher is alright since he seems to have gone over the wall.

 The Last Revenger Review
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 5:22 PM
Category: DOOM

Over on Doom Wad Station Blue Paladin wrote a review for a new megawad that goes by the name The Last Revenger, which contains 32 levels for Doom 2.
The author is Russian and he apparently changed all the menus to read in Russian so players will need some time to get used to that. As far as I know Doom Wad Station is the only site on the planet at this moment that has this megawad so people can check out the review and download it here:
Go forth and read that review for The Last Revenger.
