Quasar dropped me a message concerning the efforts of various Doom Community members in making an appeal to Raven Software and Activision in an attempt to get the already released Heretic and Hexen source code transferred from a highly restrictive EULA to the GNU GPL.Most of our organization members maintain GPL projects based on the Doom source code and would like to be able to extend support to these other Doom-engine games. Unfortunately, this incompatible license creates major problems. You can read an online copy of the open letter right here.

I just checked over 30 Doom sites to see what's going on and nothing. So the last joint I jumped onto was Wads In Progress and I noticed that hobomaster22 released Onslaught DM 3 that's designed to play in a limit removing source port. The wad has the same goal as onslaught 2, fast paced deathmatch maps with excellent gameplay preferable to 1on1's and 4 player ffa's; just now the standards are higher. And of course you have your classic death metal midis ;). Hit Wads In Progress for the rest of the story.

I just checked out WildWeasel's Doom Armory and apparently Pilottobombadier has released an updated version of Lock And Load 4, which is a weapons mod for EDGE 1.28a.Lock and Load 4C for EDGE 1.28a. aka, the third (the second was basically getting my crap together) and pretty near-perfected version sans some features that are more cosmetic than anything else (like casings). There will be another 4th version eventually, but the only thing that it will have is ejected casings. Really, that's it. The post on the Armory leads to this topic on the DRD Team Forum. For the download you can get it off the downloads page on Pilottobombadiers site.

DomRem posted on his MadLab about the release of a Doom 2 level called Frozen Inferno that is designed for singleplayer and requires a limit removing port to play.I fixed some glaring bugs in the original, implemented various gameplay suggestions by Belial and, with Tango's help, gave the level a major detailing (this is the cause of the two month delay between start and finish). Apparently the level was refurbished and re-released just before Christmas but he just recently added the news to his site. Also note that DomRem mentions the project he and Tango are working on. Hit DomRem's MadLab for more info and such.

Ajapted posted on the forums right here that he released a level generator program that goes by the name Oblige 0.81 that works best with Doom and Doom 2. Support for Heretic and HeXen is pretty shaky at the moment..The core of OBLIGE is written in the LUA scripting language, and those files are located in the "obl_data" folder with names like "planner.lua" and "th_doom1.lua". Because they are simply text files, you can edit them with a text editor (Notepad) and, assuming nothing got borked up, the changes will be used the next time you run OBLIGE -- no need to compile anything. Check out Oblige!

Over on Slashdot they posted that John Carmack has spoken out that he figures that gamers don't need Windows Vista or DirectX 10.'Personally, I wouldn't jump at something like DX10 right now. I would let things settle out a little bit and wait until there's a really strong need for it.' and then zings Microsoft's marketers over DX10's mandatory use of the Vista OS: 'Carmack then said that he's quite satisfied with Windows XP, going as far to say that Microsoft is artificially forcing gamers to move to Windows Vista for DX10.' Now that I have this partially typed up, I've clued in to the fact that info comes from a much larger Dailytech Article where John talks about much more, including the Xbox, Wii and theres more info on his thoughts concerning the whole DX10 and Vista deal.

The Alive teams objective is to survive the round and pickup items while the dead team must eliminate the alive team. I was just browsing the forums and saw that Tai posted this thread that reveals that Carnevil has decided to leave Skull Tag. Here is his revealing post on the Skull Tag Forums. After working on what started off as a variation on deathtag more than 10 years ago, I will be leaving Skulltag indefinitely. I'm not saying for certain that I will never return to Skulltag, but barring any dramatic unforseen circumstances, that will certainly be the case. So now we wait to see if somebody will take on the code and keep the port alive. Anyhow goodbye and good luck to Carnevil and whatever new project he has plans for. [edit] Also the same info has been posted on the Skull Tag News page.

So it became apparent to me recently that Moneyman released a deathmatch level back in mid December that goes by the name T3000 and is designed for Doom Legacy and should run fine in GZDoom.A large but not too large downtown setting of deathmatch mayhem, uses legacy's special 3dfloor and water features. This one I am really proud of, actually when testing I had a lot of fun. Works with as many players as you can handle. Hit Moneyman's Doom Wads and get that map.

Oh, and I'm not planning on doing any more private alpha/beta releases. Any release is going to be 100% public, source and all. Hit the ZDoomGL site and read the latest news.

Todd Hollenshead & John Carmack Interview

Category: id Software |
Take a look at this John Carmack & Todd Hollenshead Interview that Game Informer posted up where they talk about the recent Emmy Awards, Quake Wars, DX10, Vista, XBox, thier new IP and other stuff.GI: After Enemy Territories: Quake Wars ships with the highly modified Doom 3 engine and the MegaTexture support, is it time for you guys to move on from that engine?
Carmack: Yes, the in-house development project that we’ve been working on is all new technology. It still has some roots in the Doom 3 technology, but almost everything is new in there. We’re still not talking about exactly what the project is, but it’s a new IP, it’s diverting a little bit from the standard id formula and it’s not just a first-person shooter. Technically, it’s build around an advancement over the MegaTexture technology from Quake Wars. Where that was applied just to the terrain, the version of the new technology applies it into everything, so we can have that level of rich detail on all the surfaces on the entire world. That’s the push that we’re making with graphics technology. The gameplay is somewhat different from anything that we’ve of done before. The company is pursuing Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake franchises with other partner developers and all, but we’re trying to develop a brand-new franchise with this new one. Hopefully, we’ll be talking about that sometime this year, and we’ll be able to go ahead and come out of our own little cone of silence about it. Go ahead and read the three pages of Interview on Game Informer.

I just put a hit on the id Software site and noticed that they put up a press release type of post on the main page that id and John Carmack have been honored with two Emmy Awards:Las Vegas, Jan. 9, 2007 - id Software had the honor of winning two Technology Emmy Awards from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on January 8, 2007. The awards were given as part of the Science, Technology & Engineering Emmy® Awards ceremony.
The Pioneering Development Work in 3D Game Engines award was won by John Carmack, co-founder and technical director of id Software, for his cutting edge contributions to rendering technology as the lead programmer on DOOM®. id Software, a quintessential leader in technology development, was awarded a second Emmy for the company’s technological leadership in rendering breakthroughs with the QUAKE® technology.
The Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards honor achievements in two areas: Science, Engineering & Technology for Broadcast Television, which includes broadcast, cable and satellite distribution, and secondly, Science, Engineering and Technology for Broadband and Personal Television, encompassing interactive television, gaming technology, and for the first time, the Internet, cell phones, private networks, and personal media players. This year represents a milestone for the interactive entertainment industry as id Software is the very first independent game developer to be awarded an Emmy since the Academy began honoring technology innovation in 1948.
“This is an incredible honor for John Carmack and id Software,” says Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. “We consistently push the limits of gaming technology, and it’s great to be recognized for the passion and dedication we put into our games.” So there you go! Congrats id Software.

To begin with, this was merely a 100 minute speedmap created in August of 2006, but has obviously evolved into an undoubtedly superior map (to the original, that is). Go grab some Gyrotechnics.
