 Brilliant Highlights 0.50b
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:30 PM
Category: DOOM

Maha_x released Brilliant Highlights (0.50b) over on Doom 3 Files which is a graphical tweak mod for Doom 3.
I made a quick test running my Geforce 6800GT at 1600x1200 4xAA. The demo1 timedemo score fell 14% for the 0.40 version and 20% for the 0.50 version. The 0.50 has probably doubled the fragment program lenght and yet there is only 20% penalty for performance. The modern GPUs are very efficiently pipelined indeed.
Check out that mod on Doom 3 Files.

Category: DOOM

Ok so I'm a few days late but I just noticed that GZDoom 0.0.25 was released so you might want to grab the source port now that you know about it. According to the site the only important change in this version is that models are no longer mirrored.

Exclusive Conversions On Doom Wad Station
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 3:53 PM
Category: DOOM

Bob Larkin mentioned in a email that Doom Wad Station has been given the exclusive rights to the downloads of two conversions which are well worth the download. First up is a Blood TC for Doom 2 that contains new sounds, new sprites, new creatures, creepy atmosphere and tight gameplay all packed into two levels. Last but not least is a remake of the first map from Duke Nukem designed for Doom 2, which uses the textures from that resource and all the creatures and weapons are completely Doom2 and the author made it HARD with a capital H!

 Let There Be Ambient Light!
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:02 PM
Category: DOOM

Ambient Light is a Doom 3 mod (also works for Resurrection of Evil) that brightens the immediate area surrounding the player. That might be worth downgrabbing if your afraid of the dark or just happen to be annoyed at the overdarkness of Doom 3.... That's all on Doom 3 Files.

 Toilet Scene Recreated
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 12:00 AM
Category: DOOM

Dwayndibly recreated the Toilet Scene from the Doom 3 beta.
This is an attempt to remake the toilet room from the beta version of DOOM 3. I made it because I wanted to experience the scene as i saw in a video ages ago but they didn't put it in the game so i tried it my self. I'm submitting it because I don't think anyone else has tried to share the toilet scene yet and i thought some people might enjoy it.
That's all on Doom 3 Files.

Latest Reviews & Downloads On Doom Wad Station
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:30 PM
Category: DOOM

Bob Larkin has been busy with the Doom Wad Station and he reviewed a Doom 2 map and one for Doom 3. The Doom 3 map is called The Maze by LethalVirus and the Doom 2 map is called Aztec666 by Hans de Heus. Also Bob says that he started mirroring downloads for a couple of different Doom3 mods this week.
I have the full 340 meg download for "In Hell" available on the site and am mirroring downloads for the Chex Trek mod as well as "into Cerberon". Both of these mods appear to be quite good and are worth checking out.
Check out those mods on the Doom 3 TC page.

 Stalwart Redux (1.1)
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 2:01 PM
Category: DOOM

Ice Weasel released Stalwart Redux (1.1) which is a remake of the UT'99 map DM-Stalwart.
I found this one sitting on my drive from quite some months ago, and decided to release it. Only meant to be for a quick and easy blast, not a serious remake.
That is all on Doom 3 Files.

 In Hell 1.0 Released
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:20 AM
Category: DOOM

Due to being on Doom 3 Files I noticed that In Hell (1.0) was released. The Doom 3 mod is made up of 19 singleplayer and 4 multiplayer levels inspired by Ultimate Doom on Playstation 1.
In Hell is a new episode for Doom3, designed to revive the classic Doom games of the 90's. To achieve the same oppressive feeling as in Ultimate Doom or Final Doom for the Playstation 1, the focus is set on the atmosphere. Then and now the previously mentioned versions featured the best atmosphere for a horror shooter. The lugubrious sound has to be mentioned as well, since the atmosphere wouldn't appear half that grotesque and antic without a good sound. This makes those versions even better than the already excellent PC versions.
Also hit the Doom 3:In Hell site for more info and screenshots.

 Bob Larkin Interview
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 10:41 PM
Category: General

Bob Larkin of the Doom Wad Station ended up getting himself interviewed on FragArcade. You'll have to register to read it though, so I did just to see what the deal was. Here is a sneak peek:
I have been designing Doom levels for about 8 years and currently attend a local community college where I am working on a computer networking degree. I also remain home full time for our five year old and I work almost full time as a delivery driver for a local Domino's Pizza franchise.
That's all on FragArcade.

 Into Cerberon 0.0.1 Alpha Released
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 12:00 AM
Category: DOOM

Over on Doom 3 Files they're featuring the Doom 3 mod, Into Cerberon where you can download the alpha release (0.0.1).
Welcome to Into Cerberon version 0.0.1, code-named "Coal". This is a "playable test" version of the Into Cerberon mod which aims to bring the classic gameplay of the original 6-degrees-of-freedom game, Descent, into the high-powered realm of Doom³.
The screenshots certainly look nice. Also check out the Official Into Cerberon: Descent Into Doom site for the Mac and the Linux versions of the mod.

Doom Wad Station Adds Huge Archive
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 12:40 PM
Category: DOOM

Bob Larkin has been busy with the Doom Wad Station and has some big news for us all.
In an effort to offer the most complete Doom download website on the internet, I have recreated the Doom and Doom2 directories of /idgames from the public mirrors. A web interface allows the users to peruse the more than 12,000 files available in that area of the site. I will be updating weekly to keep it as current as possible. This may make Doom Wad Station the only personal site to mirror the entire archive of Doom and Doom2 on it's own server. Naturally, the benefits are enormous as there are no user limits as on some of the mirrors and downloads are not capped by the server either but are entirely reliant on available bandwidth. I hope everyone enjoys this new feature on Doom Wad Staiton.
So check out the /idgames Doom Wad Station backup archive and grab some downloads.

TeamKill & Scourge Lunar Eclipse Update
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 12:12 AM
Category: DOOM

DJ_Haruko of TeamKill dropped me a message to let us all know that Scourge Lunar Eclipse is shaping up nicely and is getting closer to being finished with 4 maps left to go. Furthermore DJ_Haruko has plans to leave TeamKill and here is his words on the matter:
I'm leaving TeamKill. I started the team about nine or ten years ago, and it's time for me to move on. I'm wanting to spend more and more time devoted to my music and programming, which is leaving very little time for Doom editing. So what's going to happen is Melfice (aka, Xenphire) is going to take over my position as leader/BDFL once SLE is finished. At that point, I'm going to stay on as just a member until Kill is finished. Once it's finished, I'm quitting Doom editing.
Check out Scourge Lunar Eclipse!

Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 9:38 PM

Apparently Kikizo Games pasted up a John Carmack Interview where they chat about the Doom Movie, Doom RPG, Doom board game and some other bits.
Kikizo: What's next for id after the new Wolfenstein?

Carmack: We are working internally on a completely new project, but we haven't made any firm plans yet for the future of the Wolf, Doom and Quake franchises.
Check out that John Carmack Interview.

 Doom Wad Station Gets Overhaul
Posted by Darren 'Doom Dude' Finch at 2:10 PM
Category: General

I nearly forgot to post about this but Bob Larkin is taking steps to make the Doom Wad Station more spiffy lookin with an overhaul. You can view the new changes on the main Doom Wad Station page and also see the changes to the review pages by taking a look at Demon Aquarium. The site is looking much cleaner and easier to navigate. Bob says that it'll take a week or more to get the reconfiguration finished.

Category: Hosted_Ports

Finally the NewDoom Community Project is finished and is ready for download after a long 3 years of hacking sectors, with a bit of cursing and some slacking as well. Personally I'm tired as hell after working through New Years on finalising it all and I think I need a beer. Happy New Year everybody!
